Where to trim the carpet under the door sills? - 08/24/11 05:27 PM

It's been a long time since I saw how it came from the factory. How far back do you guys trim the carpet before putting on the aluminum door sills. It in a 1970, I'm using Ledgendary's carpet, and it is currently overhanging just outside the car when the door is closed.

I was thinking of trimming it just short or the outside aluminum door sill trim so it sits even when screwed down, or will that lift the aluminum door sill up too much?

You can measure the gap under your door by putting a blob of rope caulk, modeling clay, or similar on top of the rocker panel and shut the door on it a few times until you get a good reading. Best to do this front and rear to check for parallel.

yes, but surely people typically trim the carpet 1/2" in or 1/4" from the outside or some sort of rule of thumb. I'd be interested too as I need to do this soon.

The lip of the sill trim goes down below the welded seam. I just ran my knife along that raised seam and cut the carpet flush with that. Then I glued the carpet down.

Once the entire interior is in. I push the carpet down against/along the top edge of the pichweld and trim the carpet there. Once the sill plates are in it will hold it in place.
That way there will be no interference between the sill plate and the bottom of the door because the sill plate sticks up to high.

It's not supposed to be wedged between the sill plate and the rocker pinch weld

My seats havn't been recovered yet. I used bolts with large washers on them to hold the carpet inplace. That seemed to work well. You need something to hold the carpet where it will be when the seats are installed. If you don't, you could end up cutting it too short at the door opening.

Well.. FWIW...

When I brought my 70 Coronet home from my parents house in 2001,
(it has been sitting in a garage since 1990) the original interior
was shot beyond all rational belief because mice had gotten in it!

When I removed the sill plates to replace the carpet, the carpet
was over the pinchweld on both the driver and passenger sides.

The sill plate was "pressed" on top of it to hold it in place.
I don't know if that's right or not but that's what I found.

I've owned the car since 1982. I'm only the 2nd owner and it was
definitely the original carpeting.

When I replaced it. The replacement carpeting (from ACC)
did not have enough material to reach over the pinchweld on either side! it did come right up to the inside edge...

But, the sill plate does not do a very good job of holding it down by itself.

So I sprayed alittle bit of the "spray adhesive" on the
floor board up where it approaches the pinchweld before
replacing the sill plate.
It looks good! ( a zillion percent improvement over what was left of the old one!)

But it was not installed exactly like the original.

The color and style (80/20 loop) matched great...

Hmmm, now I am getting memory flashbacks of the seeing the same thing when I removed my original carpet back in the early '80's.

Thanks, I'll have the seats installed when I do trim it back. The carpet I got from Ledgendary had plenty of extra length on all sides. Because the front and rear of the carpet go up under the dash and under the rear seat, I left the added length. The carpet's got so much extra width too, that it's actually slightly hanging out the doors when they are closed.

Agree, I think it shoud go OVER the weld, to make sure it's fixed by the sill plate.

You can make it shorter later - but not longer.
