A NEW Chrome plating process? - 07/03/11 05:44 PM

I watched My Classic Car this morning and Jay Leno was talking about a chroming process you can do yourself without the risk of toxins and waste removel.
I GOOGLED "new chrome plating" and found a few sources.. Any of you guys know the system Leno was talking about?

These are just a few but I'm not sure if one of them is the same system that was on MY CLASSIC CAR.

nothing new, been used in the plastic industry for years to make plexiglass mirrors,...just reltively new to the auto hobbiests,...after you see the price for the base mat'ls, and the practice to make it look effortless to apply,.....old fashion chrome plating will still be cheaper,...right now the advantage to the "NEW" process is the ability to "chrome" anything

Yeah I know it's been around awhile but what was shown on MY CLASSIC CAR looked to be something new. That's why I asked. I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned who the supplier was.

or..it could have been a new spin on an old product

I guess the major question is how much to do a fiberglass bumper, and is there a list of places somewhere?

Had this done to this motor locally.
Sad thing is , the shop went out of business.

My guess is it lasts about a month before oxidation and in less then just a few months it looks like garbage.

For the record it's not a new "chrome" process, it's simply a new highly reflective paint process that looks a lot like chrome. The tricky part of applying it properly is the required deionized water system required to get it right, and trust me, it's no walk in the park even for a VERY experieinced painter!

Did you na-sayers look at the video? That dude was just blasting the part with the gun, like water from a garden hose..did not look hard at all. Is the hard part getting the guns set up?

Isn't it basically the same as the mirror silvering process and then putting a clear coat over it to protect it? To get the red color like on the wiper motor above you just tint the clear. I've seen copper and brass look plating done that way. Mirrors have to have a protective finish on the back to protect the silvering.

From the web sites for the stuff they imply that it holds up over time as long as the clear coat holds up.

If your looking for a plater that can actually plate a FIBERGLASS bumper, or any PLASTIC with a copper/nickel/chromium process, actual plating, not metal vacummized/plastic.....

Try Advanced plating in Tennessee/Nashville area, 18005886686, they do mailorder turnaround, prices are reasonable
