'71 383 engine call outs - 06/11/11 09:07 PM

I have a '71 Road Runner with a 383. I have a question about the engine call out on the hood inserts. The numbers are white reflective, but what about the black background? My car had (not original decals) gloss black background and reflective white numbers. What is correct? I ordered a set from Performance Car Graphics and they sent reflective black background and reflective white numbers. To me, it looks like at night when the light hits it, all you will see is white.

It appears that the 383 decals on my 71 RR were black reflective decals with the 383 cut out, but no other material in them. Just body color.

I'm curious on this too. My intentions were were to use black decals with white reflective center "383" call outs.

I posted on your thread on roadrunnernest. In case you missed it...

"This is one of the rare cases I disagree with David (performace car graphics). In my experience, the decal base for the 71s is reflective white with the black "background" printed on top. My survivor is this way, and others I've looked at were the same. I asked another guy that's in the know about 71s and his opinion is the same. David swears they were two layer reflective."

I believe the reason so many originals have the callouts showing bare paint is that the printed area protects the decal a little more...so the callout areas deteriorate faster. Just a theory.

I had a (2) 71 GTX's and it was the same way. The centers were showing paint with black reflective surround.

One was a Texas car with original paint and was probably faded, the other was repainted and had NOS stripes on it. This was early 90's time frame. I probably still have pics somewhere.
