T/A Exhaust Manifold gaskets?

Do I need to use exhaust manifold gaskets when re-installing my manifolds?
I know there's a metal guard on the driver's side but are standard gaskets also required?

No gaskets where they meet the heads, just the heat sheild on the driver's side.

I noticed that gaskets are available for exhuast manifolds from 68-70.

Factory heat shield on the drivers side IS a gasket

but no gasket of any kind from the factory on the pass side

Unless your heads have been shaved and your manifolds shaved you WILL have a exhaust leak. I always use a gasket, but trim them to the outline of the exhaust manifold ports. Once installed you won't see them and you won't have any leaks either

Just to clarify, I'll use the factory metal sheild as the gasket on the driver's side and the trimmed material gasket on the passenger's side?

I just did this. I agree with the above post, unless you have resurfaced the manifolds and head mating surface, without a gasket you will have a leak. I put a gasket between the right manifold to head, and a gasket between the manifold and the heat shield on the left side. I know this is a 340, but for the record, 440/383's are the worst. The correct way is to resurface both, but that requires much more work. If it's restored oe, no gasket.If you are chasing a leak, better check the heat riser--known issue.

I'm restoring to OE level but also don't want any leak issues.
I've got the heat riser installed for appearance but welded the butterfly in the fully open position. Hopefully that should solve any leak or seizing issues.

when I did my old challenger 340 .
The current 340 heat shield was not avail.a the time.

So, I used a heavily modified 318 shield,
Combined with standard exhaust gaskets. The ones I used had fiber on one side with metal on the other.
To get it as thin as possibile to hide them, I just removed all the fiber material on the one side and used the thin metal side. Never had a problem.

trimmed gaskets were on both sides to prevent leaks. I never had a problem.

I didn't take a chance on the drivers side so I used a gasket on that side too

This is a timely post. I'll be installing my exhaust manifolds on the my 340 pretty soon and never realized that they did not come with standard gaskets. I knew about the metal heat shield but did not realize that gaskets were not used. Interesting.
