1970 BB Distributor Solenoid Wiring Pics - 04/11/11 11:28 PM

The service manual for 1970 big blocks concerning the correct wiring for the distributor vacuum advance isn't as helpful as pics of original engines and restored engines. Who here can help the rest of us out with pics of engines without their air cleaners installed, specifically asking for pics of how the vacuum advance is wired for all 1970 383 2bbl & 4bbl, 440-4bbl, and 440-6pk's built after Jan. 1, 1970.

NOS vacuum advance units typically include these two wires (black/female spade & blue/male bullet)- my guess is there was a variation or two concerning these wires.

Thanks Moparts and all its members!

Here is one variation in the vacuum advance blue (Batt) wires.

One has a male bullet connector - the other has a male spade connector...

If you PM me your email, I'll send you some pics I shot for another member. It's from a late '70 383 Mag, Holley Challenger.

PM sent MoreParts...

The one thread I found on wiring the 440-6 I'm fairly sure was for the '70 B/E bodys built before Jan.1 1970.

Almost every pic in my files has a B/RB engine with the air cleaner installed and most of those with a compressor in the way.

the neg from the solenoid goes to the grey connector of the lead from the carb which sits under the idle sspped adjustment screw which has a plastic bushing that the screw threads into. The other side of the solenoid goes to battery power with the key on. There is a lead included in the stock harness. IIRC it's dark blue. The concept is when at idle the adjustment screw touches the throttle lever which completes the circuit for the solenoid by providing the ground. The solenoid retracts the breaker plate and retards the timing by 5 degrees. I chose to eliminate this feature by cutting the wires for the solenoid where they can't be seen but retains the stock appearance.

Thanks to Jurgen for the reference pics. The 1970 383's that used the Holley carb, can see the black ground wire is a permanent pigtail that routes through the body, here is a pic from another member showing the black ground wire as it routes to the side and grounds to the idle screw.

The 1970 factory wiring diagram for the 383's simply failed to acknowledge the male and female bullet connectors in the blue 12V batt wires found on the distributor solenoid and in the main engine harness.

Here again is a pic I posted last week for the male bullet connector and where it is found exiting the main engine harness - plugs into the distributor solenoid female connector.

I'd like to know what color the connector at the carb ground is for a 383 Carter AVS in case I need M&H to reproduce one.

The 383's have been solved... we'll move onto the 440 4bbls next...

Again, as with the 383 2bb/4bbl diagram, the 440-4bbl factory diagram fails to acknowledge the bullet connectors, here are the revisions I made.

As seen in this photo from last week's thread on the 440 - it looks like all the blue wires on the new reproduction harness for the 440-4bbl's carb idle solenoid are correct. So that the new harness connects to the alternator and the engine harness connects to the new harness. In this pic the black idle solenoid ground isn't connected to anything yet and neither is the dist solenoid's blue 'batt' wire.

All that is left remaining is 1) connect the black ground lead from dist solenoid to the black lead originating at the idle solenoid harness.

And 2) to connect the blue female bullet connector off the dist solenoid (batt) to the blue male bullet connector exiting out of the main engine harness.

Wired any other way just isn't correct concerning the factory wiring diagram.

That just leaves reference pics for the 1970 440-6's built after Jan. 1, 1970 - I'd guess the wiring diagram also fails to show the bullet connectors. Maybe some of the guys here have had enough yet?!

I don't own a 440 or a 440-6 - want to thank the guys for the reference pics on the 383 and hope the rest that do own the RB's will have some good pics for the future when it comes time to initial fire-up.

only 41 years later the service manual gets a correction, LOL. Nice job on the clarification and that is exactly what i went with because it made sense.
