A body 'cuda body line question - 01/29/11 02:29 AM

The body shop got the new 1/4s on my cuda, and we noticed that behind the door there is a large indentation that flares out as it goes back toward the wheel housings. Should this be there? There was so much mud on the old 1/4s that I don't remember if there was this indentation. I want to make sure it's right before they ignore it or pull them out. By the looks of the repop 1/4s, they should be there.

I looked at a few pics and some of them look like the indentations are there and others it looks like they weren't.

Anyone know for sure?

The body line that goes the length of the door (along the lower skin) carries over to the quarter panel and fades out about 8” aft of the door jamb if that is what you are seeing.

It looks more like the upper skin. I'll try to post a pic later.

and most of the cheep quarters do not have a good line here... also most restored cars do not (people who do not know tend to block it out...)

Usually a good way to tell a good restoration or an orig car...

Found a few pictures of my 69 during color sanding. The line in the quarter is subtle, and it wasn't easy to see in the pictures after polishing.
In this picture, the line looks deeper than it really is because of the sanding residue clinging to the edges and increasing the contrast.

Anyway, it shows where the line is so we can know if this is what you are talking about.

No, I'm not talking about the line on the lower door. I'm talking about the upper portion of the 1/4 right behind the door. On the replacement 1/4s, there seems to be an indentation that slowly flares out as you get toward the wheels. I am wondering if this indentation shoule be there or should it be a smooth line to the wheel wells. If it should be smooth, then I will need to pull the 1/4s out a little in that spot. it has it on both sides which made me wonder if it should be there.

Check out the 1/4 close ups on this car on ebay. See how the upper portion shows a distortion of the reflection of the road/lines. This makes me think the indentation should be there. It's suttle, but there.

To be honest Erik, I have never noticed if my replacement quarters had that or not. For what it matters, I don't even know if the lower line is there. All I can say is these quarters are the waviest pieces of junk I have ever seen and Goodmark should be embarassed at putting junk like this out.

Are we talking about the crease that would be about 1 inch above and behind the door handle? If so on my 68 Barracuda that line is a continuation of the upper crease in the door. It fades out about half way back under the quarter window. If need be, I can try posting a picture of it.

I believe the OP is talking about the inward bulge at the front of the quarter just behind the door.

Yes, they had one, but some are too pronounced and look like a big dent.

That is kind of what I was thinking, the beginning of the outward bulge for the rear tire section.

Rick's got it! That is what I am talking about.

Here is a pic, not the best, but if you look at the 1/4 by the door, you will see where the shop sanded off the primer and was about to pull the "dent" out before I stopped them.

See the picture link below. That body contour is the reason I avoided that area with my replacement quarter. It was stamped wrong on the reproduction piece. That is absolutely the knottiest replacement quarter panel I have ever had to use.
However, I had no choice.

It is subtle, mine has it too. I'd more describe it as continuing the contour of the door back about 6-8" or so back into the quarter at which point the quarter starts to bulge out. It's the start of the sexy hump you see when you check the side rear view mirror. The bulge does not begin immediately at the front edge of the panel.
