Differences Between AMD Shaker and Original Hoods

Differences Between AMD Shaker and Original Hoods - 01/28/11 05:00 AM

Concerning cudas, I would like to know what are the cosmetic differences between the AMD Shaker hoods and an original Shaker hood. Also, what is the quality of the AMD, concerning fit, edge gap alignment, etc.? What about the trim ring? Do the AMD rings have the proper shape and profile? Will an original ring fit properly on an AMD hood?

Thanks.

Good questions.

The detail differences are many, most are subtle and not easy to describe.

Bottom line is that they are a nice part but you won't fool anyone who's "Shaker savy" with one.

Thanks. What about the fit? Will I have issues getting my gaps straight?

Can't help you there, I've never installed an AMD. Opinions seem to vary.

Quality and fit is ok on the hood which is more than I can say for my American made $2600 Shakerhood kit with upgraded Shaker bubble the bubble is(junk)!

The AMD hood fits great, the gaps are uniform, as are the skin surfaces in relation to the fenders and header panel, the trim ring is much better than those offered in the past from other vendors, fits well also, minor difference in fastner type/style underhood,..BEAparts offers arepro style ring should you be worried about "appearances" underhood,......but for price and availability, a stock hood can't compare

If OEM/Gold is your bag, look for a factory hood

Don't toss that original hood when you buy a new AMD hood, ....some sucker,..Eh, I mean enthusiast will buy it to "restore" it

I wouldn't wait to long to buy a Challenger hood from AMD,....when there gone, they might just be gone for good, the Challenger is not a big seller in relation to the Cuda hood according to Mark at AMD

Don't get me wrong, I love AMD and I love their parts but the Challenger shaker hoods are wavy compared to any other part I've purchased from them.

I bought the first batch of Shaker Hoods off AMD. The Challenger Shaker Hood is very straight with no waves. With time this might of changed do to production quanities. They are not an exact copy of the Shaker Hood that Chrysler put on their cars. They fit nice and look cool. If this is an add on to your car they are great. No sanding of rust no problems with latches because they are all 1971s and you can put a 1971 latch release on a 1970 Challenger but the reverse if hard to do putting a 1970 Hood on a 1971 Challenger do to the latch location and operation.

We used a shaker style AMD hood on a '70 'Cuda that we did a complete restoration on. The fit was very, very close but not "perfect" along the fender edges. I did some minor tweaking to get it closer, but that was the extent of it. I also had to add and/or enlarge the front seal clip holes. You will also want to use the reproduction ring. Our original did not fit the AMD hood as good as the repro.
All in all, I found it to be a very nice part and a much better option to fixing the owner's collision damaged original shaker hood.

FWIW, this same car (B5 440-6/auto.) was a last minute entry in the OE Judging at Mopar Nats. (not Carlisle as I originally posted/thx. Scott) in 2010. It lost a few points for some of the body panel gaps being too good!

I know the Mopar Nationals has OE judging, but you mentioned Carlisle

How many points did they deduct for the hood? ...Cuda looks SWEET BTW

Re: Differences Between AMD Shaker and Original Hoods - 01/30/11 05:40 AM

Scott, thanks for catching that.
I corrected my original post. And thanks for the compliment on the 'Cuda. As far as I was told, the hood was fine. I did not hear of any point deductions for that.
These are a few items that barely kept it from getting Gold. When the car was being rebuilt, the owner opted to upgrade with front discs instead of drums. Also, it came with body side moldings, which the owner had us leave off. One other strike was a finish too smooth.
Considering that the car was restored with plans of driving, and not national level judging and was a very late entry, I think the owner was pretty pleased with Silver.
