Black wrinkle finish paint - 01/24/11 02:32 AM

Anybody know which is the best wrinkle finish paint to use? I'm thinking eastwood?

VHT makes it for several things and heat ranges, a pain sorta but a nice finish...maybe worth a look.

Although I have not tried it myself, I have had a couple of different guys tell me that the Harley-Davidson wrinkle is the best they have ever used. And easy to get, too.

Ive used the Plastickote with results that I would call nice but maybe not so accurate. Its too wrinkly.....Is that a word?

What are you painting?

I've had favorable results with both H-D and Duplicolor paint. I had better results using several light coats and placing it out in the hot sun.

Painting a 70 340 air cleaner.

I used the H-D paint and let it sit in the hot summer sun afterwards and its textured but does not look correctly wrinkled at all.

I use Eastwood's Krinkle paint. Paint item 2 wet coats and then immediately put them in the household oven (elec) at 250-275 degrees for about 3 minutes. Comes out looking just like it should.

I have used the VHT and baked it in the oven. Very correct looking on my valve covers. I think the air cleaners have a little less wrinkle though.

I have used a heat gun or hot hair dryer before. That way you can control the amount of wrinkle. The thicker you lay the paint on, the more and higher wrinkles you can get. It's the same with heat. More heat, taller wrinkles.

So by juggling the amount of paint and the amount of heat, you can get most any wrinkle finish you want.

I've been happy with the results I got from a rattle-can wrinkle paint I bought from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co.

The same advice applied to my results:
The thicker the coat and the better application of heat yielded the more "aggressive" wrinkles.

Re: Black wrinkle finish paint - 01/27/11 02:23 PM

I have used VHT and Plasticote already. I have also used another one, can't remember that one though. I have found that if I put down about two light coats to give the paint good adheasion and color base, then give it one real good heavy coat (try not to get any runs), then set it in the hot sun it crinkles up really nice and fast. You may have to turn it every few minutes to get a uniform wrinkle.

You could use your wife's oven to heat it up and dry it. But see how many brownie points that gets you.

Do you think the fumes would give it away?

I used black HD krinkle paint on a HD (the heads) and it came out well. But after a few years I wanted to take it off and chrome it and man was it hard to get off. LOL!

...i have used about 3 different rattle cans and it all seems to work o.k.
about 3 coats and heat will speed the process up.
if you're real fussy get a couple of runs in your finish just like the factory usually did.
