Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 12:07 AM

70RR. In process of restoring a non-AC heater box. Already ordered kit from member here

How do you restor the fiberglass box? I see YO sells a kit with cleaner and spray base and top coat... anyone use it? Is there something better etc...?

Also how do you reproduce the yellow part# on the metal plate?

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 12:26 AM

I simply power washed mine. Some guys power wash and then lightly clear. I did not clear mine.

As for the part number. Mine was still visable and I left it. However, I think there is a member that has the stamp or template. Maybe others will chime in.

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 01:26 AM

usually lightly, and i mean lightly blast the fiberglass box. it will turn a lighter gray color. blow it off good and clear with a poly satin finish. the satin poly will bring the color back. i had a stamp company make my stamps for the part numbers.

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 01:39 AM

I power washed mine as well and scrubbed hard with a brush and Simple Green while concentrating on the "corners". I agree that mine does not need clear on the box. Be careful if powerwashing on concrete, it will scar the box if it moves around. Most people blast the sheetmetal parts and repaint as appropriate. Some high enders zinc plate brackets flap doors and clips. I am going to paint mine.

Make sure if you aren't positive of it's condition to get the heater core checked out. Rivets for the brackets you drill out will be different and many suggest a washer so they won't pull through the fiberglass

I am about half way through mine right now and need the stamp as well. I was going to do with out but if it is available and reasonable, I'd love to hear the source.

PS, you didn't damage the blower motor taking the fan off did you ? I did, and it is not a cheap lesson.

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 01:55 AM

No...got the blower fan off OK...little WD and a some sore fingers...

Was wondering about the brackets that are rivited on... drill them out?

The rest is all apart and have blasted ( glass bead) 1/2 of them... looking good so far

while the subject is at hand.
I have a B-body non air box on the bench now. And the slotted hex head screws for the ft cover are what appear to be black phosphate, maybe zinc but they are definitly black and not silver or clear. Where as on the remainder of the assy holding the box together are clear / silver

it's out of a 67 GTX if it matters

Bill, I can't tell what my front cover screws on the 68 box were. Too rusted. Definitely clear zinc on the rest as far as I can tell.

Mark (above post) restores an awesome box and has been very helpful to me.... I have done several but the last A body turned out well for me....

don't forget the drivers side vent...

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/11/11 01:31 PM

Al, When I started taking this box apart it thought it seemed odd the front plate screws would be black , yet the screws on the back cover and the box halves were clear zinc.Otherwise it's the exact same screw in dimensions and appearence

maybe it's a year thing as this box is supposed to be from a 1967 GTX hardtop

What I've done in the past for stamps...

Easiest way...Find a local company that makes rubber stamps and have them scan the original into their computer.

The other choice...Spend some time with your "Word" program on your computer searching the 100's of different fonts until you find one the same or real close. Then print it off playing with the "size" and "spacing" until it matches.

Print it off, draw a box around it with a black marker....NOW take that to a local Staples or something similar and get a stamp made...Cost $20-$30 probably....Use it once then sell it to me

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/12/11 01:45 PM

stamps are not that tough to get made. found an online place did a few proofs and had them shipped out in less that a week. usually less than $10 a stamp.

I have a local mom and pop print company make them for me. as long is it doesn't have 'artwork ' on it they usually run in the $10-$15 range .

I had a stamp made for the 69 and down voltage regulator a few months ago as an example and they were about $15 each

Ones with artwok , such as a pentastar for example ran in the $25 each range

Thanks for the info on the font and size Mark. I looked at the preview with the 2 point border option also. Maybe have to request the 1 point ? Or is that the default size or something when we select border

Also, Does anyone know what number goes on a 68 box ?

Thanks,

What the number for 70 B Body non/A/C ?
Posted By: macmic87

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/12/11 07:20 PM

the fiberglass part of the box is the same from 1966-1970. 1966-67 has some differences with the heat/ defrost flapper and a seperate part number (MODEL 747). 1968-1970 are all the same with 2 slight differences. first the part number. and, second the reason it is a different part number is the heater core. 1966-1969 is the same heater core with a 5/8 inlet and a 5/8 outlet. the 1970 has a 1/2 inlet with a 5/8 outlet.

thought maybe i had an answer. for 1969 if the heater box was in a canadian car the part number was 2837501 in stead of 2837500. went back and checked to see if that was so for the 1970 and it was not. the number ends up being 2936068 (canadian) instead of what i am used to seeing 2936680. well you can see that in the above post. what is the build date of your car? maybe it is late in the model year. with mopar, never say never.

068 Canadian is not a B-Body is it? It is listed under another column on your parts book pic....Looks like C-Body. I'm betting his may be a Canuck car.....Does it have a Y05 0r Y07 on the fender tag?

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/13/11 04:41 PM

Find a can of the correct color in spray can. Spray it on a flat metal surface that you can dip the stamp into. The trick is to get just the right amount to pick up on the stamp surface. Too much and your stamp will look smudgy, too dry and you'll not get a nice transfer. Practice some before doing your box because you only have one shot at it.

There is also an ink that works on metal surfaces.
I believe it's a silk screeners ink. Bottle I have is labeled Ultimate Ink

Last time I needed it I bought it thru a local print / sign shop called sign-o-rama, unfortunately there are none of these near me anymore. but I did find it at one in Evansville In that said she could get it

I could not find the correct font anywhere on the computer. I actually put a LOT of time into making these. I made correctly looking font numbers by hand 8 inches tall and shunk them on my copier until they were sized perfectly to an original, then I copied all the numbers together in a group spacing them identically to an original stamping.

Hey what paint and gloss did you use for the metal plate with the stamp on it...?
Posted By: hemi70se

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 06:01 PM

The front metal cover should have black phosp. screws and not clear zinc ones like in the pic shown above. I have noticed that the screw head markings on them are different between the #680 and #681 boxes also. I paint the black metal cover plate with a gloss black enamel with a little bit of flattening agent mixed in so it isn't overly glossy.

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 07:02 PM

So if you were to use "Chassie Black" would you use 60-70% gloss( satin) or 85%....
Posted By: FJ5_Fish

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 07:11 PM

It is fairly glossy - I would put it at 10-12% flattened - or 88-90 gloss - depending on which way you look at it.
Posted By: hemi70se

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 07:52 PM

I would not use "Chassis black" on anything. I concur with Jim, about 90% gloss. Remember that today's paints have had 40 years of refinements to make them glossier. The "gloss black" you will get at the paint store is formulated for maximum shine because they assume you are using it on the exterior of a car. If you want it to get just the right sheen of gloss you need to SLIGHTLY dull it down some with some flattening agent.
Posted By: JMCFAN

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 08:33 PM

ok.... so the inside of my RR doors ( exposed area) is also black. same gloss... or same paint anway..?
Posted By: FJ5_Fish

Re: Heater Box resto? - 01/14/11 09:41 PM

You mean the UDF (upper door frame) color that is on the doors of the car? If they are coded black (should be on your fender tag) that is exterior gloss enamel.....same stuff they would paint the car with. The UDF color was applied before the body color then masked off. The attached is a pic of the original black off of my Daytona. The Chargers had a pad covering the UDF so it wasn't painted there...A Bee, Runner etc. would be.

I am getting ready to do mine for my 69 Coronet R/T. I need the 2837500 stamp, does anyone have one collecting dust?

i believe that in some of the prior posts in this thread, that the build date was the deciding factor. prior to Jan of 1970 the ending number would be a 1 and after Jan of 1970 would be a 0.

Hello:
This is excellent information.....Just starting on the box on my son's 68 Road Runner and wonder if anyone can help identify the sticker next to the yellow numbers...There is absoulty no info on it. This car has been around a bit so it may not even be a factory sticker.
I apprecciate any help you can be on this.
