DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP???

DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/09/11 05:14 AM

Could someone help me with finding a shop that does a "good" job,at a fair price? I need the front bumper on my '69' GTX re-done. No real dings or dents to fix on it,so I'm thinking it would be cheaper to keep my original, and get it done! I was at a swap meet today, and was blown away at the prices from Bumper Boyz, out of L.A.! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

As with most things, you get what you pay for.

"Get what ya' pay for?" I'm sure I can do MUCH better than $390.00,exchange...and get a BETTER finish than what I saw on their stuff! Just sayin'! I need to also check Year One...where I bought a rear bumper,outright...for $275.00,a few yrs. ago.

You could get a better finish than Bumper Boyz if you redid your bumpers with an angle grinder and 2 cans of silver Rustoleum.

We had the front bumper re-chromed for my Dart chromed by a local place for $170. We're really happy with it. I'd have to look up the address.

I know this is not in the Detroit area but I sent my Cuda bumpers to
North Star Plating
2110 South 10th St
Brainerd, Mn 56401

Phone 1-218-829-6324 1-800-432-3720

Price in 2001 was $260.00 per bumper. You won't be disappointed.

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 12:39 AM

Kath..$270.00 sounds like a NICE price...if they did a good job, which it sounds like they did! I'd REALLY appreciate it if you sent me their name, phone #,and address! Greg,I hear North Star does a GREAT job,but I really want to stay local,to help my "fellow Detroiter's" who need all the help they can get!

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 01:31 AM

$170, not $270...We paid $15 for a straight bumper on Ebay so for less than $200 total we got a really nice bumper.

Name is Spectron Industries, phone # is (517) 423-8268. The place looks like a hurricane went through it (you'll see what I mean if you go) but they do nice work.

In Canada, about 3hrs from Detroit you can look at paying about $500+ to get ONE bumper done

Tri-City Plating Near Bristol Tn. does outstanding work, especially considering their price and turn-around. Excellent quality, easy to work with, they only do bumpers. For a nice driver/show car they are hard to beat.

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 04:07 AM

I used to be in the wood boat restoration bussiness and we did alot of business with Jennings Plating. They were in a bad part of warren as we were only there about a ten minutes and our hub-caps were stolen off our company van. I think they had a contract with some company that supplied new GM emblems for the muscle cars. Last time I was there they had boxe's full of Chevelle door panel emblems (SS)

They even did President Clinton's Cadillac grill as it was damaged by flying debris from a jet engine. (thats the story they gave us??)

They did my 69 Superbee hood scoop trims and they turned out mint along with a really pitted BERGER Chervolet emblem. It too turned out perfect.

Those guys knew what they were doing! BUT, With the new law's and such maybe they had to shut there doors, its been a few years since I talked to them.

Good Luck.

B&L Plating in Warren Michigan is fantastic but not cheap..Reason being they strip the bumper, fix any imperfections,,copper plate the bumper first then buff the copper to a mirror like finish the triple nickle plate the chrome...You cant ask for anything better and its a family owned business...Thier work is second to none and if you are not happy they will redo the part.. Cant skimp on this..You DO get what you pay for..

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 05:10 PM

Jim..thank you for the GREAT info on B&L! Since I'm on a "fixed" income,I absolutely have to keep to a price ceiling on car parts! I HATE it..but it's a reality I have to live with! I cannot afford to pay $400-$500 for a bumper! My GTX is not a show car to begin with. It's in good shape, and runs GREAT..but I have no aspirations to EVER put it in shows! I believe I can find someone to re-do mine for $300.00,or less...and still do a GOOD job! I don't see why not! Thanks again for the info!

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 05:15 PM

David,I'm not afraid to venture into south Warren..that's where I grew up..but I know what you're saying! Lots of punk-azzes runnin' around down there! I will see if Jennings is still around, and how their pricing is! Thans again for the info!

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/10/11 05:25 PM

Just got a phone call from a VERY HONEST man!...Gino from B&L Plating! He said they only do their work ONE WAY..The BEST way! Which means EXPENSIVE..at least to me,and my budget! He was talking $600-$700.00! They MUST do AWESOME work! What an up-front..and HONEST guy! He said if he can come up with another plater in the area that could do it for my price..and do a decent job,he would call me! How COOL is that of him??!!! BTW..Dave,Gino told me Jennings doesn't have large enough tanks to do bumpers! My search continues! Any additional names appreciated!

Go to Mike Riehl in Roseville and buy a new bumper for $350 from them and be done with it. You can sell your older bumper and get a $100 at the mopar swap at Gibraltar on the 29th of January.

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/12/11 05:11 PM

Hey Randy,

Thanks! Yes I've used them since and have some misc chrome that needs to go in this winter. Used them in 2000/2001??? (getting old)they did my Superbee bumpers, they did plate one bumper twice to get it like I wanted it but no complaints and they still look great!!!If prices havent went up too much they should be right around 300.00 a bumper.
Freind of mine Jack used them in 06 for his Superbee bumpers came out very nice and price was 600.00 for the pair.Jacks bumper got tapped last summer and they were really great with him repaired it quick and think they were more than reasonable.
Can you tell these guys have done us right! I'm with you on supporting the local guys, if we dont do it and they shut the doors where we going to go??

Let me know how everything turns out.......Paul

Re: DETROIT-AREA CHROME PLATING SHOP??? - 01/15/11 06:47 PM

Randy My bumpers were 600 each from B&L but 1972 road runner bumpers are HUGE both front and rear..
I would be willing to bet you could get Gino to do them for 300 each...They are terriffic people to deal with...Good Luck...
