pre 70 woodrim on a 70 GTX - 11/18/10 11:21 PM

Hi guys,
So I have a woodrim wheel I intend to mount to my 70. I have purchased the plastic 'spacer', but Im stumped as to how/where the spacer mounts! lol
I figure it fits between the top of the column and the wheel? If so how can I mount the 3 tags/clips on the spacer? Do I need to drill the wheel? Seems I can mount the wheel without the spacer?
Maybe Im missing something here, but I cant find anything searching the web on this.

my wheel is ....#2925134
pad/horn mount...#2925135
Im using a repop '70 spacer

cheers Dave

the late 69 + 70 wheels have 3 holes,
1 near the center of the wheel at the bottom of each spoke to mount the spacer/filler

you can use your filler as template to drill the 3 holes

the filler fills the gap between the wheel + the steering column so you dont see inside the column cavity with the wider than 68-9 horn pad adapter

You need the 70 only style horn cap adapter for the 70 column. They introduced the ignition into the column in 1970 as well as lock steering and had to make the column a larger diameter. The 70 adapter is bigger diameter as well to accomodate. 68-69 adapter is part # 2925135 and the 70 adapter is 2996720. See attached, 70 on the right.

On late '69 wheels #2925134 with 3 holes that I have, the part # stampings are 90 degrees to the early #2925134 wheel with no holes I have. I believe they were anticipating the change to the larger column for the '70 model year.

I have a '70 b-body dealer filmstrip. On the pictures of the pilot car with the woodgrain wheel, you can see that they still had the '68-'69 spacer, evidently the proper spacer hadn't been supplied at that date. FWIW from pictures on the filmstrip the pilot car GTX can be placed in Vail, Colorado in April of '69.

As to if a late '69 woodgrain wheel could have been placed on a early production '70 car, my guess would be yes if it was on a steering wheel rack at the plant. I will freely admit that someone who has more direct knowledge about wheels could agree or disagree with the installation on early '70 cars.
