exhaust for 73 318 dart? - 09/10/10 02:32 PM

I have a 73 dart with the stock 318 2 bbl and stock exhaust manifolds. On the passenger side it has the stock 1973 single exhaust with the Y pipe cut off from going to driverside. on driverside it has basicly a copy of the passenger side but it goes all the way to the exhaust manifold.

What i really would like is a dual system from manifolds back using the same size pipes as the stock single exhaust.

Any ideas ?

Take it to an exhaust shop and have one bent up, you can use tailpipes from a 340 car (they will be bigger than what's on there now), but unless the 340 used the same exhaust manifolds the headpipes will not work.

I did excactly that to a 74 Barracuda w/ a 318 2bbl. and ran it for 18 years and 195,000 miles that way. Not much of a performance enhancer and there's only one small issue to be careful of. Those small restictive exhaust manifolds have a beveled port where the hole is, inside the flange area. You may run into a flat mating issue where the new flanged exhaust pipe bolts up to the manifolds. I had a local Mieneke Exhaust shop do it and it came out fine. For giggles you should get a least a reputable muffler for the 2 HP performance gain you'll achieve. An added bonus was the mufflers were warrantied for as long as I owned the car and I had them replaced a number of times..

Would there be an added benifit running it this way if you upgraded the cam/intake/carb? What is the least restictive LA manifold? I want to run dual exhaust on my F-body. No one makes a decent header, (ok maybe TTI, but I don't have $600+ in my pocket) they all hang too low. I've seen block hugger headers but I'm uncertain about the starter clearence.

Will I have any carb turning issues with the 340 size pipes?

I ordered the 2.5" dual kit from summit racing. The H pipe is my own handiwork with some scrap and a holesaw.

On the drivers side I had to buy an adapter to go from the factory 2"? size to the 2.5" system.

For the passenger side I cut the Y pipe and capped it off near the drivers side and made up a new pipe using what was left on the passenger side and some scrap around the garage.

Works great and has been like that for 2 years now, this winter I'm going to make up new pipes because I'm going to a 340 manifold on the drivers side and a 2.5" Dakota manifold on the passenger side.

Unless you have a mig welder and a sawzall this might not be an option for you, just passing along what I did.

Exhaust tips are from turbo Daytonas!

I had no issues with the stock 2-barrel carb running with the duals.
