Fixing my turn signals: cylinder removal problem - 06/19/10 01:21 PM

Hi folks,

Upon trying to repair my turn signals ('70 Challenger) by replacing the wiring, I found myself unable to remove the 'corrugated aluminium cylinder' (see picture). I tried different kinds of tools but it just wouldn't come off. Any of you guys have an idea of what kind of tool exactly I need to pull this cylinder off?
In the original service manual, it's described as "remove nut (see picture) and washer from steering shaft and install tool C-3428A to pull cylinder from shaft splines."
God knows what this tool C-3428A is, so that's why I'm checking with you guys? Anyone got a description/picture of the needed tool so I can order it? Thanks a great deal fellas!

Make a simple puller tool with a peice of threaded rod. Take flat peice 1/4" plate and thread it for the threaded rod. Bolt the flat to the can and tighten the threaded rod against the steering shaft.

Sometimes carefully it can be pulled off by hand, or a little prying, carefully. You did remove the nut right? Got a slide hammer?

Yes I removed the nut, but the whole thing is stuck as hell, it's never come off before in it's life I'm guessing, and what exactly could I use the slide hammer for? I'm not familiar with the tool and Google/Wikipedia is very fuzzy about it.
Thx in advance and all hail to the awesome challengers in your pic!

Hey Thanks,

If you can attach the slide hammer to the can, you will be able to pop it off with a few slides of the hammer.

Alright I'm gonna try it with the slide hammer then, but just any type of slide hammer would do? Are there any specifications as to how big the slide hammer should be or are these tools universal sized? And the only thing I should do before pulling off the can is loosening the nut then?
Thx in advance
