Paint guys, how much primer?

Paint guys, how much primer? - 08/12/08 05:38 AM

Im redoing the paint in my engine bay on a 70 duster. going with the ol' mopar green. Anyways, about how many layers of primer do I need to shoot? You could guess Im not a body guy. I used 80 grit to take most of the original paint off, then shot it, then used 400 to take it down a bit and re-shot it. Do I need another coat? Also, about how many coats of the paint should I lay down? How much paint do you suspect I'll need? Will a pint get it done? Or do I need a quart? This is my first real paint job. Thanks!

Not sure of all the details, but I can give you a bump. I think you need to get enough paint on there to wet sand and buff if you plan to do such things. As far as the primer goes it sounds like you have enough. If it is sealer I think you will need to scratch it a bit with a scotch brite pad or some fine grit sand paper. Thats not coming from a pr or anything, but just what I have learned over the years.

Sounds about right, the only thing I question is? Did you get enough of the 80 grit scratches out? I would have suggested to use maybe 220 after the first coat and then 320-400 before the final coat of primer. I think 2 coats would be enough in the engine compartment. Good luck, and I sure it will turn out nice.

Just the engine bay? If your satisfied with the surface of what you have now, and your have primer coverage, you can now squirt color. Buy a quart, you don't want the headache of running out. Unless you get coverage in one coat (where you cannot see through the paint at all, I would squirt three coats. In fact if it was mine, I would squirt the first coat slightly light (wet, with flowout, but not heavy) not trying to acheive zero transparency, and plan on two more medium coats. I am assuming single stage! If Base/clear I would try to acheive the base in two coats. And I would also think more about only 1 pint of base in that case.

I bought a quart of ppg single stage to do my engine compartment and trunk. Once you add in the reducer and hardener that quart will be more than enough.

I bought a quart of chevy orange and painted my daily driver engine twice (don't ask) and still have tons of it leftover.

Thanks guys! The primer is laid good enough for me for what Im doing with it. Just didnt know if I needed more than just good coverage. As far as the paint, I'll probably go with the quart so I dont run out as suggested. Im just gonna use a single stage, I think it should turn out alright. Only bad part is I have to spray it in my driveway so keeping dirt out is going to be the challenge. Anyone know of a good online store to buy the paint at?
