Reproduction choke available for Holley on 383/440? - 06/08/10 05:34 PM

I can't find one anywhere (except NOS on e-bay) that's affordable... For '71 and '72 in my case -both take the same one. I know some '69 and '70 models had them too.

The cross-referenced or replacement part # listed in the Mopar parts book is dead wrong and does not fit correctly -- I paid a lot of money to find out...

Could you tell us exactly what your application is? There are a lot of different Holley four bbl chokes for 70-72 cars. Please post specifics.

Then you have obviously NEVER seen OR owned a 1970 Big block with a 4bbl since you are confusing the OP issue with your 68 and 69 big block 4bbl cars ...

HELLOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you can thank Dan for confusing you.

That is correct for 1970 ,edit ... i see you need a thick basket wit hthe holley also ... but it is definitely needed for a CARTER or the carb will not fully seat to the manifold and you might break it trying .

Re: Reproduction choke available for Holley on 383/440? - 06/10/10 06:17 PM

The pictures are correct, you need a 1/4" thick base gasket for the proper carb height, a thin gasket will have the carb resting on top of the choke housing, NAPA has the correct gasket. This is the same gasket for 383 Carter or Holley and 440 4BBL GTX, the chokes are different.

If you were around Seattle area shows in the early 2000's then it would be painfully obvious that he did own a 1970 Road Runner 383 AT car. We were all so glad when he flipped it. It was advertised here on moparts.

An NOS one on eBay is about 70.00. Do you consider that to be "affordable"? BTW, the choke for a 70 383+4 Holley is NOT the same as for a 71. The chokes are different, although they all have the word Holley stamped into them.

there seems to be a jungle of different chokes out there,i hope they have a part.nr stanced on them, otherwise it could be tricky to find the right one,at least if its not attatched to a manifold or in a nos box

Re: Reproduction choke available for Holley on 383/440? - 06/12/10 04:29 AM

my car was a very early 70 RR and had been swapped [possibly] to an AVS so i just used what it had.. it ran great and looked good... yes it should have had a holley factory according to the sheet, i bought it from the orig owner too.. and if owning a car for 10+ yrs is flipping it.... i guess i,m a flipper! i have never seen one of those big thermostats on a car so i guess some had em... always been 2 BBLs i,ve seen with em.. i know my 69 has the flat one.. From the 72' FSM, this choke spring design first appeared on most V8s beginning in 1970 and was used thru 72', 73' used electrically heated choke springs requiring another choke well design.

dan , that is 1970/UP choke thermo. it's used on ALL 1970 Big block 4bbls , no matter what carb it had, there is obviously one specific to holley or carter as far as the rod that connects to the carb goes but they are all of the domed design because the 1970 manifold is different than 68/69 . If your 70 had a flat one then it also had the wrong intake, but it don't matter because you flipped it.

Re: Reproduction choke available for Holley on 383/440? - 06/13/10 07:51 PM

john it was a very early LA car so it could have had a 69 intake on it... or maybe something happened early on and it got changed... it was a #,s car.. also the pass side exh manifold was a 73 date code so maybe some parts were swapped or whatever... the orig owner was in his 60,s when he bought it new... so i doubt he did it.. dan
