Dog Dish Caps How to tell if they are Authentic? - 08/02/08 06:09 PM
How do you tell if a set of Plymouth dog dish caps are authentic originals and not re-pops. Thanks in advance for your advice.

As common as they are I would see no reason to repop them.

FYI... BEA Parts in Medina, OH is repopping these dog dish hub caps for a cool $ 325.00 for a set of four.

ragfish, take a close up shot of one, then I might be able to tell if they are original or repro. FWIW, the repro caps are nice but not 100% correct.

Originals will have spider webs and shelf wear from laying in a shed for the last 40 years. There is also the possibility that one will have dog food residue in it.

they're reproducing the plain caps, but not the ones with 'Plymouth Division' on them. (or at least I haven't seen them)

The Plymouth division and the red stripe dodge w/ the trident in the center are both being reproduced. Hey Mike Ross, could you post a pic of them?

Thanks for the tips, I am certain now mine are originals. I have them up for sale and got an e-mail from someone that said they look like repops, and if they were truly originals they would be worth 10 times my asking price. I wanted to be sure I wasn't representing something wrong, as far as 10 times my 200 asking price I am sure that's false as well. Is 200 fair, to high, to low? Thanks for the help.

Depends on condition. If the center portion is 'lumpy' from dent/ding damage and/or the outer edge that snaps onto a wheel is damaged, maybe not $200 a set of 4. However if they are nice w/minimal repairs needed $200 is a fair price.

FWIW, I paid $200 for a restored set of '65 dogdishes. They were absolutely mint. I thought the price was fair..really depends on the shape they are in.

I sold a set of Original Plymouth Division caps a while ago on the bag. One of them was toast, the others were nice, driver quality. I se the the Starting bid at $20(figured $5 a cap was fair)
They ended up selling for $165
