Black "Crinkle" Finish - 03/23/10 03:36 AM
I just picked up a stock 71 BB air cleaner. It is in decent shape, but needs to be properly finished to look good.
It had a prior primer job and I am planning on getting it dipped an repainting it. I am curious as to the right materials to do the correct "crinkle" style finish on it.
What have you guys used?
Here's some photos...

I put down a ground coat of satin black, though gloss is fine too. Then heavy coats of the wrinkle-finish black, which requires heat to properly wrinkle. For a consistent wrinkle pattern, you need to play with the heat. Heat gun works, an oven that you don't ever want to heat food in again is even better. Practice on a similar metal that you don't care about first if you haven't done this before.

I had a local powder coating company do mine. I think it was $65. Still looks perfect after 7 years or so.

This stuff works great but it must be warm out to get even "wrinkling"...
