I would call JW, TCI,B&M and ask their tech guys what they recommend. I know JW has built me specific stall speeds for my applications in the past with great results.

John Winters built mine and I couldn't be happier.

For a low buck solution we use stock 340 replacement converters and drill the lugs for hemi sized bolts.

I used the Hemi converter from Turbo Action for my stock resto 68 Hemi Road Runner and I am very happy with it.

I also go the low dollar route. Using the '68 383HP torque converter is the same unit as the street hemi's, except for the bolt size of course. This info was in one of the older Direct Connection manuals and there was a very good section telling about which converters the factory had used. Either way these 383 units(called the Falcon?) work out rather well for a stall around 2850 IIRC Good Luck!

From what I gather none of the converter companies actually make an OE replacement you can purchase off the shelf. -
I'll make a few inquiries from the info posted above. Thanks again

A "true" street hemi torque converter has quite a few differences than a run of the mill wide ring gear TF8 converter. They are high stall and utilize the larger mounting bolts. But additionally, and this is VERY important, the back cover is dished to accomodate the larger bolts(and diameter) of the 8 bolt crank. You can use a "conventional" 727 high stall converter core, but you will need to use wafer thin flexplate bolts as to not interfere(contact) the converter back cover. Many converter companies like Dacco have referred to a wide ring gear, neutral balance, high stall converter as a "hemi" converter in the generic sense, but unless they are using an actual street hemi core it isn't a true hemi converter.

I have a few originals at the shop. I could possibly photograph if someone needed to see it.

FYI

These are the flexplate bolts you need to not have any issues with interference when using a standard 727 converter with a hemi(or any 8 bolt flange) crankshaft. Note the very thin head. They fit fine and won't hit the back of the converter, but they are too long and you need to take about 1/4" off them or they will hit the rear main seal retainer. No big deal- I just use a cutoff wheel and radius the cut edge. You also need to buy two pkgs as they only come in a pack of 6 . ARP may make a proper bolt- I just got used to these and they aren't ridiculously priced.

Have you looked for an original? They're still around. I bought a spare a few years ago and have seen some on eBay. Not sure if I want to sell mine just yet but believe me when I say start looking(calling) around.

Here is an original that came with my cuda, was going to use it but, did not use as I went with a 10" new race converter with 2700 stall per Bob K's recommendation.
