Paint sample color seems off. Now what?

Paint sample color seems off. Now what? - 07/26/08 12:22 AM

My car is getting close to being ready for paint and I was eyeing up 1970 EK2 Go-Mango as one of my color choices. I had the PPG vendor mix up a touch up bottle of paint just so I could see what it looks like before commiting to a full gallon and it looks more like brown than orange to me.

I have never seen a car with go-mango paint in person so I can only go by the pictures I have in car magazines and on the net. This touch up paint is no where near as vibrant or appealing as I thought it might be. Looks almost like Heinz 57 sauce.

Is it common to have urethane paints reworked so they look right? Trouble is I don't have access to a sample of what it's really supposed to look like otherwise they could mix it to match. The whole car has PPG primer on it so I'm stuck with PPG paint now.

This is what I was thinking it was supposed to look like. The color I have is much darker.

That picture looks awful bright for an EK2 color. The car in the picture looks more like the Omaha orange (paint code 99 for 1969) than EK2. Hard to tell though, as the color in the camera might be what is off. Unless they reset the white balance its very difficult to get a true sense of what a color is just from a picture.

Lighting makes a difference.

The color I have is darker than the shadow side of the first superbird picture (at least on my screen). More brown than orange.

I took a sample of it outsdie in the sunlight and it's still kinda blah looking.

I might have a batch of martin senior paint mixed up just to compare it to the PPG paint. If they are night and day apart then I will know there is a problem.

Neil,
Here's a K2 I sprayed several years ago...
it was with the PPG DBU basecoat; DBC wasn't available... still might not be.

A small sample can be pretty hard to judge the color by.

Hope this helps !

Single stage urethane or base/clear? If it is base color you will need to make sure that you clear it to get an accurate picture of the final color. You may want to shoot a color card as what you apply it to will affect the tint as well. EK2 is light and has a little metallic in it also.

Nice job. (as always)

All I have done is used the touch up brush on the lid to wipe a small test sample. Maybe I'll put a little in a paint gun and see if it changes anything.

The sample is single stage since that was easiest for the lady to make. It does have a tiny amount of flake in it. Barely.

In case you plan to use base/clear, keep in mind that a color in single stage almost NEVER looks the same in base/clear.
This especially true with metallics.

Thanks for the advice.

The painter wants to do the engine compartment and trunk in single stage and the exterior in base-clear. Easier I guess? I'll have the paint shop adjust the single stage to match the base-clear so there isn't two different colors when the hood is open.

I'll get the EK2 test sprayed tomorrow. I was really hoping it looked better than it does in the touch-up bottle. Right now I would steer clear of it, but we will see soon enough. I'm looking for a bright + easy to maintain factory 1970 color. If the EK2 doesn't pan out there is always Sublime or Lemon Twist I guess.

UPDATE: I got a test patch sprayed out and it didn't lighten up very much. Not so sure I like it. It's not bad, but not what I expected either.

It seems larger volumes of mixed paint is a more accurate representation of the formula they are mixed from. If all they mixed up was your touch up bottle, I bet thats where the problem is. Mix up a minimum of a pint or quart and do some spray samples.
