Richard its good to see you here. I notice your in Cuda-Challenger more so I suppose. I bought my 70 Gomango car about the same time you purchased yours. I hope your making progress. Perhaps Im missing the crush zones of the hood, but how otherwise can you tell this is a 71 thru 74 hood? I know the later hoods have the grooves that allow the hood to fold up upon impact. Am I missing seeing this here?

Kevin

Iagree buddy I also thought it was a 70 but I have heard 2 opinions on this. just wanted to post it up to be sure. Other than the cruble zone don't know any other difference.

My car is coming along slow but sure. Just about ready to dip it and strip it down to bare metal.

If you're using the crumple zone as your only indicator, then it could still be a hood from 1970. That crumple zone showed up late in the 70 model year. Other things to check would be how the hood molding attaches, and what type of bolt holds the hinges onto the hood.

71 cars front hood molding wrapped under the edge of the hood and had some screws there. Are there holes for these screws?

70 hoods used a used a hinge bolt size that was different than the bolts used on 71-74 cars. (I don't remember the size off the top of my head, but I'm thinking the later hoods used bigger stronger bolts and the holes in the hinges are also larger to accept said bolts.) I'm not sure if the bolt size was changed the same time the crumple zone was added, or if it was done later.

Original paint color/stripes/emblems could also potentially be clues.

Do hoods have date codes???

afaik,
1970 = NO crumple zone and 5/16" hood hinge to hood bolts

1971 = WITH crumple zone and 3/8" hood hinge to hood bolts

1971 front hood moulding thing is to easily modified or added later on in life to be a determining factor

Richard, over in the general chat section, I have pics of my progress. Ive had my ups and downs and struggled with my own limited talents. Mopars are harder than GM cars to restore and Im only now getting awefully close to painting.

But to contribute to this post, if I understand others (if) the front of the hood trim molding isnt on the car, or the hood hinge bolts arent showing, then you cant (??) tell if its a 70 model or 71 thru 74?? I mean they arent on this picture so how can you tell. If you see crump zones then they could still be late 70 and 71 and above. I read in a post somewhere California was ahead of the rest of the country in omissions and safety regulations standards that California cars had crumple zones earlier in the year than Hamtrack cars. But who knows!!

my 1970 challenger was a dec 1969 car , built at the LA plant. and it didn't have the crumple zones and had 5/16" hood hinge to hood bolts ( 1/2" hex btw )
