70 Challenger R/T V code with T/A hood

70 Challenger R/T V code with T/A hood - 07/18/08 01:04 PM

I know they made a few hemis, but what about 6 pack cars? With the lack of shakers would/did they put any T/A hoods on six pack (non T/A)cars? Would they have the unsilenced air cleaner? I have seen the oddball hemi baseplate, was there a 440 six pack baseplate to seal to the hood??

Mike,

The T/A hood is fully accepted in NHRA Stock and Super Stock (Matt Rover's B/SA 71 440+6 car has it, among others) but in the real world, I know of no original examples at this time.

The T/A hood / lack of Shakers story has been proven here many times as a myth. IIRC, the two situations do not overlap time wise.

Just to elaborate a little further so that no one gets confused. Yes, some non TA challengers received that fiberglass hood. No, it doesn't have anything to do with a lack of shaker hoods.

Re: 70 Challenger R/T V code with T/A hood - 07/18/08 08:36 PM

I know of the existence of four 1970 non-T/A Challengers built with the N94 fiberglas hood.
FWIW The three listed below that still exist also have the "J81" rear spoiler.

JS23R0B - black R/T 4-spd "RIP"
JS23R0B - red R/T automatic
JH23H0B - blue automatic
JS23N0B - green R/T automatic (pic below)

I've heard a rumor/seen a pic of a blue 440 SIX PACK car in Texas, but no proof of factory installed hood.
I'd "assume" the 440 Six Pack cars would use the T/A air cleaner.

Yep, It's JP. He's very excited. I am looking forward to this build. Shouldn't give Big Ed anything to worry about, but I do predict some good things.

Finally get to build a car with a "good" Polyglas tire.

There was a V code 70 Challenger with a T/A hood that went through the Mecum Auction in St. Paul a few weeks ago. I wasn't there, but the listing says it was professionally restored and has the broadcast sheet. Lot number S213 http://www.mecumauction.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=MN0608-71370&entryRow=205

High bid of 56K.

I wasn't there either, but 4-spd & bench seat doesn't tend to indicate an "authentic" restoration.
Anybody know this car?

ALL manual transmission E-bodies were bucket seat cars.
ALL bench seat E-bodies were column shift automatics.

I apologize, I'm not as familiar with E bodies, but I assumed that the bench seat was an option with a 4 speed, much like the GTX came standard with bucket seats, you could opt for a bench regardless of transmission.

Was the blue Texas car you are referring to was around Dallas? If so I bought it several years ago. It wasn't a real N94 car just an old drag car with an original T/A hood. See pic of car and fender tag.

I'll have to find the pic of it in a field & 440 SIX PACK emblems on the hood?
... although EB7 and the paint loss seems familiar.

The guy I bought it from said it sat outside in a field with a couple of other Mopars for about 13 years. It did have 440 Six Pack emblems on the side of the scoop.

Please find that pic. If it is my car I would love to see another picture of it from its dormant years.

I heard years ago that you could special order the T/A hood on a Hemi Cuda also? Will the Dodge hood fit on a Cuda? They are not interchangeable on the A12 B Bodies.

I saw one NEW in 1970 sitting in front of Mr. Norm's showroom on the street with dealer plates on it. It was Panther Pink, Black vinyl top, Black rear window louvers, Black rear spoiler, Black interior, Console 4 speed, 440 six pack with the Black T/A type hood. It was stunning!

Tom,

That's not my old Six Pack Challenger which was a B5 Blue with blue interior 4 Speed car. The car was restored by Tem and ran a T/A hood for most of the time he owned it, but changed to the correct Rallye hood before he sold it...

Re: 70 Challenger R/T V code with T/A hood - 07/21/08 04:03 AM

Tom, it was great visiting you.

The N94 hood was an option on Challenger 340s and Challenger R/Ts after it's introduction in 1970, and this did continue for the 1971 model year.

The Challenger Shaker hoods being "replaced" with the N94 hood is a myth as stated earlier in the thread. The 1970 shaker hoods were available (again) before the N94 hood was released for production.

Re: 70 Challenger R/T V code with T/A hood - 07/21/08 07:49 AM

While looking for additional info to add, I found a copy of a thread I printed off MOPARTS on 6/12/2003
reply posts by the "usual suspects": Y07_A66, ph23vo, 442w30, KISSAlien, Snoopy, worthywads & formula_s

Thread was started by MoparDanny, apparently he kicked his addiction and is no longer a user.
"70 Challenger 340 with N94 Option???"
VIN# JH23H0B405538
E55 D32 J45 J81 N94 R22 V98
was listed on ebay #2419085297 at the time

excerpt from a dealer memo:

4/13/70 ... The Challenger T/A Fiberglass Hood (N94) is now available on all Challenger models with 4-barrel engines. It cannot be ordered with the Shaker Hood, Moulding Group A (A63) or with the Special Edition models. The radio antenna will be mounted on the rear quarter panel as with the T/A Package. Because of the Dull Organisol Black finish, the Hood Performance Tape Treatment (V21) will not be available.

Per the memo 440 w/SIXPACK may be questionable 2-barrel(s), but I doubt it. It would also appear that a base Challenger JH23/27 with 383 4-barrel could've been ordered. The rear mounted antenna also may have been hit or miss. The two HEMI cars were radio-less when new, and if memory serves me right the 340 car 's antenna was on the front fender same as where my car's factory antenna hole is.
