late 72-74 Challenger vapor tank - 09/01/09 12:14 AM

I've started cleaning up some of the smaller brakets and things from the Challenger. I dipped the vapor tank in EvapoRust since it was a crusty mess. It is looking a lot better but before I continue working on it I need to make sure it is still usable first.

Here is what I started with.

After sitting overnight. I assume the yellow is a chemical reaction with the EvapoRust and doesn't mean the tank was painted yellow from the factory.

What is inside these things? It sounds like there is a valve inside. I can here it when I move the tank from side to side. Also, I blocked all but one of the four tubes in front and blew compressed air into the tank. No air comes out of the 5th tube that goes up to the charcole canister.

I have a small pinhole in the top of the tank that I found today. It could be sealed up, but if there is a valve inside it that's junk I might as well look for a new one. Thanks

If you end up having to cut it open to find out what's inside, please post the results here so everyone else can learn too.

Good luck finding one of those new. I've been looking for years. You would think it would have been a service part, like the gas tank. If anyone has a lead on these, please post. Thanks.

I thought maybe that most guys wouldn't even bother using them when putting thier cars back together. I was hoping someone would have a nice used one from down south.
