E body frame rail splash shield

E body frame rail splash shield - 08/31/09 01:59 PM

My car was missing all the splash shields that go on the bottom of the frame rails. I'm ordering the two K frame splash shields from A&M. I picked this shield up on Ebay.

Is this for auto trans cars only? Mini is an auto trans car and the shield lines up nicely with the holes in the frame rail.

Is there supposed to be another shield on the passenger frame rail? Just wondering if I'm missing anything else.

Here's what they looked like when they were new.

Yes, it is a splash shield for the starter. I think they were on all cars, not just automatics. I'll look at my unrestored 4-spd when I get home.

I was wondering why they wouldn't put it on a manual trans car. Was something in the way?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm building a 440/6 clone that was an auto and is going to be a 4 speed. From my research it should't be on a 4 speed car......but why?

I think many were taken off by the first mechanic to work under the car, they are a pain to work around.
FWIW they cleanup very nicely with a pressure washer, mine looked worse than yours and this is what it looks like 3 years later sitting in my garage.

If you don't mind me asking, How were they held on? Screws or rivets?

If it is rivets, is this the right type of rivet?
If it is I have plenty I could send you some.

The holes in my frame are threaded. My original fasteners were missing along with the original shield, but from what I've gathered the shield was held on with machine screws, the same as used on the rear axle bumpers.

I think those rivets are for the two shields that go up by the K frame.

I just looked at my car and it is not on it. All of the other splash sheilds are there, but that one is missing. I thought I pulled one off of a 340 4-spd car once. I could be wrong.

also used on the E-body rear muffler shields

AND have been found on the 2 smaller ft shields on some cars in place of the rivets

The shields were bolted or riveted. The rivets’ would have been steel and not aluminum. The large shield that Tav originally posted about was on automatic cars only and was considered a starter shield on the drivers side frame rail only.

Not used on 4spd .If I remember correctly, there exists a Chryler assembly drawing stating such. Drawings are NOT in Barry`s Hamtramck Registry archive any more . I had the same question some time ago and found the answer in the achive.

Whats the size of these screws ?
Are they suppose to be zinc or black phosphate ?

So I would assume if your using these screws for the front splash shields and heat shields on a 71 e-body you would need (6) OR (8) total ?

Re: E body frame rail splash shield - 09/03/09 01:36 PM

Heat shields 3 each
Starter splash shield 4 ?
K frame shields 2 each
Rear axle rebound bumpers 2 each

I count 16

Yes, the Starter splash shield uses 4

Did the K frame shields ever use these screws? I thought they always had rivets. I think the holes in the frame are a different size.

What are the heat shields you guys are referring to?

2 on each on front splash shield or ? 4
Axle rebound bumpers take captive washer 1/4-20 bolts (4)
Mine is 4 spd no spash shield.
Rear heat shields should take 1 each on front due to rear
portion of the heat shield attached to the tip hangers ?

So I would think total of 6 for 4 spd car and 10 for auto car.
Bill, Get ready to take an order.

the 2 smaller K-frame sheilds USUALLY take rivets, but I've seen nunerous used shields where the plastic was damaged due to a bolt turning and digging into them.

rear muffler shields take 3 each I believe.
1 on the front and 2 along the side where they bolt to the side of the frame rail. rear is tucked under the muffler hanger to trunk floor brackets

I don't agree....The rebound bumbers never used a 1/4 20 bolt, there would have to be nuts welded inside the frame rail which there isn't.
The muffler heat shield require 3 each AND the rear muffler hanger....I guess you could omit the two that go into each frame rail if you're into rattles

Most 72-74 cars that I've restored used the screws on the K frame shields, but recently I've been finding pop rivits on the 70's I've been working on. I believe 71 would be the change over year.

I'm sticking with my first count.

Re: E body frame rail splash shield - 09/03/09 02:58 PM

I guess I'm totally screwed up with this

I just removed some clean ones and they were
1/4-20 captive washer on both cars.
Self tapping 1/4-20 screws don't need a welded nut in the frame to hold tight.

So we need (10 for a 4 spd car and 14 for automatic.

What are the K frame sheilds your talking about? Do you have a pic? I'm drawing a blank for some reason on those.

Shields that mount on the bottom side of the frame on both side in front of the engine but behind the radiator. They shield water from the fan and engine.

Oh, the muffler heat shields. I'm working on a T/A clone and they don't use those shields.

You can check your frame to see if your car used screws or rivets for the K frame splash shields. Mine used rivets, but if it were screws the hole would be stretched a little and I'd be able to see the cut threads like I can with the starter shield.

Just buy them in bulk...50 or 100 at a time, that's what I do
