Can a '68 regulator be used w/ electronic ignition? I would think it can't, but I want to make sure.

I have read many times that if you install electronic ignition in the 69 and older cars that you must convert to 70's and up charging system.
That would mean dual field alt. with regulator change and the pigtail for regulator. 69 and older points style charging system just doesn't supply enough voltage for ignition/electrical when converting to electronic ign.

Go to the parts store and ask for a new regulator for a '68. It will be an electronic replacement for the points type, plugs right in.

I am not sure why you would have to. The only possible reason is to clean up the power bumps that mechanical regulators are known for. If you get a solid state replacement regulator that looks like the older one, I would go that route. Just looks better to me in a matching number car in my opinion.

The charging system has nothing to do with the ignition system. So to better answer your question yes you can use the 68 charging system with electronic ignition.

My car worked fine with the old style reg. I noticed no difference when I went to the new style VR. I only did so becasue that was the way the new engine harness was set up.

Thanks, everyone. The car has an electronic setup in it now. The car is not matching numbers and by all means won't be stock when I am done with it. The car was pretty much hacked together and the more I get into it the more I wish I never purchased it!

My 68 still has the old style regulator. MP electronic and runs super. No issuses with voltage at all

I used the original style mechanical VR w/ an electronic ignition in my '69 Bee from 1986 till 2007 when I upgraded to a 70's style 75amp alternator and VR. Never really had problems with it (once it was gapped properly). But if you ever had a mechanical regulator get stuck, you might want to consider changing it out.

No worse than an electronic regulator when it craps out and decides to full field.

I have only seen that happen once. 99% of the time, the emitter junction on the pass transistor fails, opening the circuit and no charge occurs. If it did stick on, just unplug the regulator connector or either field wire and limp home.
I fished an old black with yellow lettering regulator and a Kmart/Penske ignition module out of the trunk extension area where I kept them in case of a failure on the road. Been there for 28 years undisturbed and forgotten.
