A body Spare Tire Well

A body Spare Tire Well - 06/25/09 03:13 PM

Last weekend I dropped the fuel tank out of the cuda and saw what a bad hack job had been done to fix the spare tire well. I ordered a new well piece from Dante and will be putting it in this weekend (hopefully). Since the original well has already been cut, I don't know how deep it should be. Can someone tell me how deep it should be so I get it in the right place? I would hate to put it in the wrong place and find out I have to do it again when the gas tank won't line up right.

Thanks!

I just got it last night. I'll have to measure it when I get home. I didn't know they were different. Lousy A-bodies! E-bodies are MUCH easier!!

I'll also need the measurments of where to mount the spare holddown/fuel tank mounts since the one on my car is long gone.

I checked the fit of the patch I got from Dante. It looks like it will fit fine.

In case you still need depth of spare tire well it’s 6" when measured using a straight edge across the trunk floor above the fuel tank, in the rear it's more like 6 1/8". Also the fuel tank strap brackets are located straight back from the openings in the cross member for the tank straps and pretty much centered on the ends of the spare tire hold down bracket (if that makes any sense?).

Got it. Thanks. I started to take out the old patch today. After I got through the thick layer of black roofing caulk, then the layer of white sealing caulk, I found the numerous shodily done spot welds. I am trying to figure out the best way to remove them.

I also grinded about 1/2" of putty off of the rear valance. Who knows what the previous owners were thinking w/ this car. It's quite the hack job. I am putting way more into it than I originally planned.

I am not having an easy time w/ these welds! I can't get the angle grinder in there to be able to grind them down. Anyone have any suggestions? I'll have to get a pic so you know what I am trying to do.
