Any tricks to laying carpet???? - 06/19/08 11:50 PM

I am trying to lay Dante's trim parts carpet in my cuda, and unless someone here has some real good ideas, it appears I'm going to have to take it to a professional. It seems with a steamer maybe or???

Let it sit outside where it's warm to soften it up. Once it's in the car start at the trans tunnel and work towards the outside of the car when locating the seat and seatbelt holes.

You can also pile on some phone books or just about anything with some reasonable weight to it for a few days to force it into shape. The trans tunnel is the hard part. Once you get that down nice and snug the rest is easy.

The sun-trick works pretty well. The carpet in my Super Bee does not conform completely around the 4sp hump. However, it is slowly starting to take the proper shape. A little time can make carpets do their thing.

I made the mistake once of not getting the tunnel tight and then trimming at the sills. After a while the feet tighten the carpet against the tunnel and it pulls from beneath the sills. Not a good time.

Lay it in first. Start at the trans tunnel, and work it outwards from there evenly. Trial fitting will help with where the rear section should lay in, then go from there. I use 3m spray adhesive in small amounts to help with fitting, especially around the 4spd hump. A soldering iron (not a gun) works really well for the seat belt bolt holes....remember measure twice, use iron once!

Are the ECS carpets shipping? Is that the answer?

It doesn't help that its a four speed car with a rollcage, but it doesnt come close to laying to the conformity of the floor.

I'll try the sun tomorrow. If not I'll try ECS!

Dumb question...but is the carpet placed in the car correctly? The front piece is pretty self explantory, but I've had the rear piece in backwards before without realizing it....

If you try and lay carpet, you are just going to make her mad! You need to lay pipe!

Yeah, Its in right. I looked at the old to verify. It just is very "flat" right now. I thought maybe rent a steamer or...

Right now I think out in the sun to soften it up may get me close. It just seems a little loose on the trans tunnel after the four speed "bulge" and up top on the firewall.

The whole carpet seems to have very little definition which just may be that it is fresh out of the box.

If the sun doesn't work, does anyone know where to rent one of those steamers?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Using a heat gun on the backside can do wonders as well. (Backside of the carpet... )
Experiment on a scrap piece to see how hot you can get it.

My old vocational school floor mechanic teacher always said that we are installing carpet, not laying it. I'm a floor mechanic too BTW

I hear your supposed to use nails to hold it in?

I've laid carpets into about 6 or 7 muscle cars, the best trick I could give you is to use a soldering iron and poke holes through the back of the carpet for the seat mounts and seat belts. It is much cleaner than using a knife, and it is not as prone to fraying.

Also it's alot more conservative, its very easy to go overboard w/ a knife.
