07/23 Update, more pics - My '68 Hemi Charger R/T - 06/17/08 11:08 PM

Well, the long day has accorded as of today, my LL1 turquoise '68 Hemi Charger R/T has paint on it again post-screw up from Smitty at MuscleCars and More. I'm sure ya'll know the story.... Here are pictures I took today at the body shop... They have painted the engine compartment and she's looking great. They didn't have the battery tray in, but that'll be easy to place into the fix... Bill was smoothing out the trunk area in preparation for paint back there... After which, the underside will be shot with the dark gray primer paint and then the rest of the car, blah blah blah...

But, I'm stoked because it is so smooth and nice this time.... Here are some pics from today.. I'll eventually merge all my other threads into a complete thread..... Also a pic of the trunk lid after is was smoothed out from all the "gravel" on it and the interior floor pan after we discovered it really needed some attention.... This car is rock solid now..... icon_smile_big

The 1st one is where we all started some 6 years ago.....

I'll probably go back Friday for more updated pictures....

07/16: I've added a hemi pic....

Troy,

Just breathtaking man!!! Congrats. Now, when I get my LL1 runner done we'll have to go get a photo shoot or something! Mine will have a Black vinyl top. That's giving me a lot more inspiration to get mine done and into some color. Now, if I can just get off this freakin' trip and start welding again!!!

Cheers from the other side of the planet:

Looking awesome! Post more pics as you get them, I love checking out your car, you've done a really nice job on it.

*The 4 speed mate to your car is currently sitting in my driveway as I type this, I'm delivering it to it's new owner in Canada this comming weekend, he swapped his beautiful Dark red 67 Hemi 4 speed GTX plus some cash to own the only other known LL1 68 Hemi Charger, he's a VERY happy new owner! He actually drives his cars allot and isn't afraid to smash the throttle when the mood strikes. His immediate plans include pulling and stashing the numbers matching engine to be replaced by a fresh "World" based Ray Barton Hemi, should be a fun ride!

Thanks Scott.... Wow, that's cool about the '68 over at your pad... That would be something if there were only 2 built in that color... Wouldn't surprise me if there was only a handful for I've only seen a handful of LL1 Charger of all models to begin with, let along a factory Hemi-car...

If I end up keeping the car (only getting rid of it if I find a Daytona), I'll probably sell off some of my stuff like this extra rim-blow to have you redo the carbs...

Re: She has paint !!!! Again... My '68 Hemi Charger R/T - 06/18/08 04:20 PM

Looking good Troy. I have a question about the colour though.

Scott you said there are only two '68 Hemi Chargers with LL1 paint. Is there another colour offered that year that is close to LL1? The only reason I'm asking is because I have seen one up here in that colour.

Re: She has paint !!!! Again... My '68 Hemi Charger R/T - 06/18/08 04:40 PM

Yes, two shades of turqoise listed as available for 68 Chargers: KK1 Light Turquoise Metallic & LL1 Medium Dark Turqoise Metallic.

I won't say there were only two LL1 68 Hemi Chargers built, there's no way that would be known for certain because records on individual color combinatins were not kept. According to the currently "known" cars (by Galen Govier and others like him who keep track of them), only two are known to exist (1 automatic, 1 4 speed), others could pop up in the future via some private/reclusive owner comming out of his hole, or one that's been hidden away as a restoration junker or project car that hasn't seen the light of day for 20 years, but with Hemi cars being so high profile the chances of that are pretty slim.

I agree, no way to ever verify.. Mine is the one Galen knows about. I got the car from a personal friend of Galens up in Dallas many many moons ago.. All I know is LL1 is a very "uncommon" color. I agree with you Scott that hemi cars have a higher profile than most and thus, will tend to "SURFACE" more often than not...

Makes letting her go for a Daytona that much more difficult.....

Here are some more pics from yesterday afternoon... This is the dark gray OEM "primer"-colored paint that Dave Patik sells over at Performance Car Graphics. Monday the body's exterior will receive paint (and the subsequent "overspray" on the underside) and then the other panels.. It's looking real good and I'm thus far very pleased....

Re: 06/27 Update, it's getting closer - My '68 Hemi - 06/27/08 11:36 PM

Here are some more from today. Boy, it's getting closer...

As I saw her when I got there next to the Spoiler..

The hood, deck lid and front valance ready for installation and buffing...

Right frontal view... Lookie at those lil' holes in the door...

Left rear...

I tried to make sure they didn't smooth out the factory seam there between the end cap and quarter.. I also made sure the gaps between the rear valance and end caps were exactly the same as original... You'll notice the dark primer color under the car.. Some would have had more overspray, some less... I let things fall as they may treating the painter as an assembly line painter back in the day..

Another shot of the underside and the effort I made to duplicate the OEM primer/overspray. It may not be "perfect", but she's mine..

Frontal picture of the underside.. Bill will fade some more overspray from the front both on the inside framerails and floorpan behind the firewall-2-floorpan pinch weld.

Great looking color..

Engine bay shot. There is some touch up to do on the bolts and fasteners. The fenders were temporarily placed and fitted. Then, the body sealer will be placed in between the inner fender panels and fenders. Battery tray attach hardware will be painted as well just like in the day.

Frontal shot...

Another side view...

Finally image for today...............

OMFG - can I say that ? Gorgeous color - I know a guy who had one with a 440, when it was for sale I couldn't swing it - it went to Mass. I think - one car I wish I could get another shot at - white vinyl roof and interior - and a HEMI to boot ? Double...no triple - congrats - Joe

Wow, that color looks fantastic.

Two questions-

Was the factory primer shiny like the grey underbody paint you used?

What's the reasoning behind not painting roof? I'm asssuming you're having a vinyl top installed, but I still wonder.

Super job so far. I would be if my vehicle was at that stage.

The underside does have clear on it. I want to still have the ability to clean it easily.. As you know, real primer is a pain in the [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean] to clean.. I'm want to be as original as possible, but not to the point of having nothing more than a trailer queen and I never drive it in the rain.... So, this way, I sort of get the best of both worlds.

The roof was painted white before... So, there's really no need to paint it again body color.. With that being said, originally, the the complete roof of a vinyl top wasn't painted. (If I'm not mistaken).

Thanks for the kind words... I'll be taking the trunk latch items tomorrow so he can finish with that... Then it's cut and buff, install all front wheel well shields and undercoat all the wheel wells.. Finally, the black finish to the taillamp panel will be applied...

Absolutely fantasmagorical Troy! I'm itching to have mine in color now. Thanks for the pep-pics. I'm out on a trip and when I get back I'll be finally finishing up the welding on my 68 (now a Hemi) Road Runner. Just a few more pieces to weld up: trunk gutters, gas tank strap braces, spare tire mount, and the lower rad support. Then it's bodywork time and then that beautiful LL1 will be gracing yet another B-Body in the Houston area. We'll have to talk about the painter when I get closer this fall. Keep up the good work and talk to you soon!

Here's a shot of the "disposition" of my Beeper back together. Enjoy!

The Bee may be going to Paintshop 101 in San Antonio in the coming months.. (after the Cuda gets redone). I might get them to redo the underside in the same primer treatment as yours... I LIKE IT!

11/10 Update - suspension - My '68 Hemi Charger R/T - 11/11/08 02:53 AM

Well, finally got one side finished for the most part...... I'm thinking of starting on the other side tomorrow.. Taking a personal day off to attend my son's elementary's ceremony of Veterans Day in uniform.. After which, it's garage time. icon_smile_big

I decided to leave the leafs natural since that's the way they came new... They won't look perfect, but with the wire wheel, it didn't turn out so bad... The clamping process turned out to be easier than I thought... Thanks to Jet for the inspiration... Now I'm closer on getting the rear of the car on the ground.. The housing's painted already and have new u-bolts....

When you say 'natural' do you mean just bare metal?
If so,to keep the looking good for longer is there such a thing as a paint which would mimic'bare metal'

I decided to leave the leafs natural since that's the way they came new...

When you say 'natural' do you mean just bare metal?
If so,to keep the looking good for longer is there such a thing as a paint which would mimic'bare metal'
Cheers

Eastwood sells products like that.. I prefer though not to do that for paint scratches/chips over time.. Granted, I'm using a clear paint, but it isn't as obvious to wear and tear as coloreed paint would be.. The wire wheel I have on my grinder cleans the leafs up pretty good while maintaining the cold steel look to it.. The Krylon satin clear I use, for me, does the ticket.. Doesn't shine too much, maintains the steel look and protects for corrosion control as well..

11/16 Update - fuel tank - 11/17/08 02:45 AM

Here's some of the tasks done today.. I installed the filler neck, cap and tank so it could be done before I installed the rear leaf springs and differential.... Obviously, the tank's installation would be easier with the rear out of the way... I finally finished the leaf springs today and I'm pleased on the outcome.. I'll probably have the majority of the rear installed by week's end....

Sorry for the residue and dirty look.. Still some dust from the body shop I haven't cleaned off yet....... I luckily had a very nice original trunk-2-filler tube seal for the reproductions are different.... I'd rather have a very nice original as opposed to a ok new reproduction... Speaking of reproduction, I went with the cap sold by Jamie over at megapartsusa and it is great... Waiting for the gas cap trim ring from Mike from BE&A....

Cheers,

Troy I love most of what you've done, most of it is over the top...NOS fuel tank I hate to say it but your Charger is way to nice to use those generic U bolts...Seriously someones checking out the undercarriage, lookin at the sweet fuel tank only to see those U bolts hanging down an inch further than stockers plus the area over the axle should be flat instead it's round....

On your next car...assemble the rear axle on the bench then put the whole thing in as a unit Just a friendly tip

Darn, it's that obvious? I was hoping it wasn't. Who sells the correct ones? I tried finding them, but couldn't.. Maybe Frank over at Roger Gibson's?

Just emailed Frank... Proper ones on their way...

I've done it both ways, I actually prefer putting the housing on the springs first & building it in place so & don't have to deal with all the weight as an assy...But I tend to work alone...

01/06 Update - brake/fuel/tranny lines - My '68 Hemi - 01/07/09 12:41 AM

Hey gang..
Well, a belated Christmas gift.. I received my box of fluid lines from FineLines today.. Thanks to Randy at Dixie Restoration Parts... Gave me a great deal on the complete sets and kits... Had to check it out and put something on.. Since I'll be installing the engine/tranny soon, figured the firewall brake line would be the most appropriate..

The lines and kits are complete for the brake system, fuel system and tranny....

On to the next step.......... Since the Daytona I was looking to buy has sold, looks like I'll get more done on this jewel.....

Box of booty...

Mild steel or Stainless? If Stainless you need to use a few extra steps to stop leaks cause leaking brake fluid will eat the pretty paint off your firewall & frame rail...

Other then that..Looking Great!! Pretty tough being forced to keep a 68 HemiCharger..

USPS uses DOT 5 fluid, you should see some of the problems they have because of it...That stuff sucks the moisture out of everything & creates a rusty muck, I haven't seen the same problems in normal applications but Postal trucks definately have issues...

Guess I'll need to get some feedback now on the straightening of the fuel and brake lines.. I see there's a big bend in it, which I knew about and expected... But, you only do it once and I wanna get it done right the first time.....

Any words of wisdom from experience on these FineLine kits and their straightening?

Re: 01/06 Update - brake/fuel/tranny lines - My '68 Hemi - 01/07/09 05:15 PM

I've always just laid it out on the shop floor & carefully worked the bend out, it has a large enough radius that removing it is pretty easy & if you put a little effort into it you came virtually eliminate the bend....

Cool, I was thinking of getting some 2x4's next to each other to act as guides and a channel and place the bend in it and work it out... I've heard it's easy...

Thanks Randy.......

I unbent mine by hand. They are gentle bends and seemed to come out pretty easily.

01/12 Update - brake lines - My '68 Hemi - 01/13/09 12:33 PM

I went a head and started and it wasn't as hard as I envisioned, much to the opposite of what others have already stated that have "been there, done that"....

Soooo, one more step closer............ next, fuel lines..........

bad angle on the picture.. Sorry gang........

In the front waiting for the valving.

Went a head and cleaned up the original c-clips for the flexible hoses.. If I can save an original piece, it's going back on....... Original on the left.

Same pics in my question on lines, but wanted to updatee this thread...

Re: 01/13 Update - fuel lines - My '68 Hemi - 01/14/09 03:21 AM

Another step forward... Got the main 3/8 fuel and 1/4 return line in this evening.. Pretty smooth sailing, but did have to tweak things in the engine compartment area on both.. I can see why this is so much easier with nothing in the way and up in the air...
