AMD gas tank reviews - 04/15/24 08:01 PM

Anybody using AMD or any aftermarket fuel tanks? How do they compare to original tanks?

Are you sure they are made by AMD. ?
Any chance they are rebranded / relabeled Spectre tanks ?

I have no idea who makes them. AMD has some listed.

I have purchased a couple made-in-Canada Spectra gas tanks for e-bodies. Very nice quality!

I have 2 cars with aftermarket restoration tanks.
Bought the cars that way, previous owners installed them.
One has the galvanized-ish finish, and the other is painted silver.
No problems with either one.

I've replaced three tanks from various vendors in '67 B-Bodies. They all fit well except the "wings" on the front corners. On every one I had to bend them inward for clearance. But it's no big deal. shruggy

Ive toyed with the idea to replace the tank in my 66.

I want the all shiney and new look.

The one in the car was NOS when the car was done. But it was far from mint when installed and got overspray on it when the car was painted back early 2000s

Prices for them are all over the map , which one is the best and closest to OE stock appearing.

The originals had more of a galvanized finish than the reproductions I've seen.
There was some discussion on that, maybe a few years ago, though.
Why not pull the NOS tank out & clean it up ?

i replaced the tank in my charger last year with a stainless tank from vans.
reasonably priced, although i bought it years ago, and fit perfectly.
i don't know where it was made, but i suspect "not here". frown

I would go witg Tanks.Inc. they make all of the tanks for everyone.

I've thought about that.
But with what that doesn't attack the finish.,,,, yet can remove some paint overspray. Not to mention it no longer looks " new "

Gonna have to sneak up on it and of course it'll depend on what original finish it had:
Maybe lacquer thinner, maybe a DA sander with 3000 or 2000 grit.
Then clear coat it.

This will be a project I revisit this fall.

The car goes back east for the summer from May till mid August

On the '67 B-bodies I've worked on the OEM tanks were galvanized. Of the replacements, all were galvanized except one which was painted. I don't think you could ever maintain a "like new" galvanized appearance without some kind of clear coat. We've all seen galvanized parts weather and this would be no exception. For the last one I have to do, I'm going with stainless, I'll give up the appearance to get get away from the corrosion concern.
