Repairing fender tag

Repairing fender tag - 08/10/23 02:21 AM

My fender tag is in "ok" condition but has some areas with minor perferations where rust ate through. Prior to painting, wanted to check if anyone had done a tag restoration and had any tips. I was thinking of possibly just doctoring the reverse side with some jb weld and a fine paint brush. I don't think body filler would hold up on such a small area.

I'm doing a restoration on my one owner car back to show room original condition, and I want my fender tag to look like it did on the day I picked the car up from the dealer. So I did use a small amount of Bondo and 3M spot putty to make the fender tag look like new. If anyone has negative comments about that, I'm not listening. It's my car.

Thanks, I may give that a try.if it's worked for you. I think the holes, despite their small size, may end up looking like black dots even with everything painted green.

Interesting. I have the same problem. I've contemplated using solder with an electric iron or JB Weld but I haven't tried anything. Don't want to screw it up because it is a St. Louis car with the inspection punches that I don't think anyone offers. Something is better than nothing.

It had some rust pitting and a few perforations. This is what it looks like after rust removal, a small amount of Bondo and spot putty, careful sanding, then a coat of primer. It could use some more sanding.

Just take a pic front and back before to prove what you had to begin with.

Around some people doing "anything" to a tag means you've committed the an 11th commandment.

Lol. I hear that. The next car I do, I’m not even going paint it!

What's next for potential buyers? Baking tags in a 450* oven for 45 minutes?
If worried, could have considered a repro tag and keep the original with paperwork.

Bunk.

My restored fender tag precisely matches the paperwork - the original sales order, the original window sticker, and 2 original build sheets. Why would anyone think that I need a repro tag?

Putting a repro tag on a car - how many in the community would think that's shady?

I wonder how many classic car flippers are capable of counterfeiting raised type onto a tag that looks real? With Bondo? With steel stencils?

I talked with the repo guy, he has the original stamping tool and won’t make one without proper docs

So is he "authorized" to reproduce a tag?
Just because you have the means to make something, doesn't mean you have the right to.

Are we still on fender tags, or has this silently morphed to VIN tags? fan

Re: Repairing fender tag - 08/16/23 01:51 AM

really.
Anyone worried about an original fender tag due to damage, or someone taking it, could remove and store the original fender tag with paperwork and not worry about the repro screwed to an inner fender.

A fender plate is not a VIN plate, that’s Federal. Fender ‘tag’ is an option-paint code reference that’s not needed to register the car. But mopar guys are obsessed with them “ITS GOT TO BE LEGAL” I have a 4 door /6 cars tag that I’m putting on the real Hemi car to just mess with the paint dab crayon mark minds, lol.

That note, printed out on a repro FT, would be hilarious - seems someone's done that, but maybe I'm confusing wishful amusement with memory...

So then it's "open season" for anyone to make them; correct or otherwise.

It’s not a legal issue, if one does not know WHAT they’re looking at, move on or ASK for documentation.
