Cowl dents

Cowl dents - 02/22/23 11:34 PM

I almost smoothed these out on my 69 gtx, then Remembered seeing them on other cars.
I went fishing for a12s since they were only built in one plant/same plant as my gtx, and I’m finding
Them all dented.

So….is it a lynch road thing, or did other plants do it?

Side note, the glob of seam sealer on the pinch weld never made sense to me until I ground it off…

Other assembly plants also had the cowl dents. There was a few page thread over on the A12 Registry/playground site about this. I'll see if I can find the thread. My '69 GTX "E" LA assembly plant has them along with a friend's (local) '69 LA plant Road Runner too. I'll post photos of both.

Personally I think this is how and where those "dimples" are made, but you know what they say about opinions. blush wink

Perfect, thanks.

Been looking at that for a long time on a lot of cars, that is for sure.

Can't open the link without registering.......Site registration doesn't work, I probably have nothing of value to contribute and I really don't want to dink around with emailing the admin to get in, so
will be satisfied with this tiny bit of research. Appreciate the comments!

Maybe they whacked the upper cowl panels with a hammer to seat it before/during welding ?

IMO I don't think so as they always seem to be consistent in spacing, location and depth. Some examples even look like they were done by the weight of the Body in White (BIW) chassis like the car going into the dip tank. But again just an opinion and a discussion point that's been kicked around.

Its on some thread that I read but can’t remember where. Those dents were done at the lynch road plant. One dent was first shift and two dents was second shift on the welding line

From what I have seen on the dents they seem very consistent in location and depth. I think A12 is correct, it was from the rigging when the body went through the dip tank.

I’ve got two Lynch road cars and both only have one dent per side not the two in the last picture. And they are not as deep.

Mine has one dent per side also, in the same location of the pics I posted.

It’s an interesting factory flaw that I’ll leave alone, knowing it’s normal.
