1969 Barracuda "Slickback"

1969 Barracuda "Slickback" - 07/25/22 10:41 PM

I have recently acquired what's left of a 1969 Barracuda fastback with the slickback option. Up until I unloaded the car at home and started researching the car I had never seen or heard of this option. Which is a vinyl top covering the roof from windshield trim to rear window trim and bordered by a piece of chrome trim on each side, located approx 1.5"/2" from the drip rails. The vinyl covering like most of the rest of the car has long since disappeared leaving the chrome side trim. I was wondering if anybody here could guide me through removing those side pieces without damaging them.

Thank You
Randy

A buddy has a 69 Cuda that's Q5 Turquois with that vinyl top.

I can't help with the clip removal info, but with with a pic maybe someone can.

It's Fireman Joe's car.
From what I understand it's a factory Q5 car.

That is a sweet car!!!!! You don't see many slickbacks.

Moldings like that are usually attached by plastic clips that secure to welded T-posts.
It wouldn't seem likely that they'd drill holes in the roof.
If the moldings are stainless, a plastic molding tool (think nylon pry bar) or two should pop them off.
If they're aluminum, be VERY careful.

Not sure if they're shown in the FSM but when I get some time later I can look.

Here’s mine. The trim can be removed with a wide flat upholstery trim remover, the clips can be drilled out of rusted and replaced easily. Got mine from Stephens Performance. I may even have extras tucked away if you need them.

The Slickback option is in the 1969 Barracuda sales brochure. But what is the option code? Is it listed on the fender tag?

Re: 1969 Barracuda "Slickback" - 07/28/22 05:09 AM

it is simply a vinyl top OPTION on the BH29 Barracuda fastback - available in: V1X black, V1W white, V1F green, V1T tan (NOT AVAILABLE in "Mod Top")

"slickback" is just a fancy marketing word for the brochure - it found its way on to roughly 9.5% of fastback production

Wiki refers to it on some Chrysler models as "canopy" style. Don't know if the "slickback" fits this category or not??

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinyl_roof

Canopy - in this style, the vinyl covering is applied only to the front half or two thirds of the roof, usually ending at the trailing edge of the rear side windows. The windshield pillars are very commonly covered in this style, but the C pillars never are.

I wouldn't consider the Slickback to be a Canopy.
Canopy is front or rear half.
The Slickback was the simplest and likely cheapest way to add a VT option to the Barracuda FB.
To me it's simply a VT in the same way as GM did them for a while with perimeter moldings.
Look at a '69 Camaro or early Monte Carlo for example.
Calling it a Slickback was marketing hype - more exciting to the execs than "vinyl top".

FWIW, page 10 of the sales brochure for the 1969 Barracuda, no doubt written by a draft card burner in a Beatle haircut, mentioned not only "Slickback" for a fastback with vinyl top, but also these:

"Drophead" for Barracuda convertible.

"Knockabout" for notchback with 6-cylinder and 3-speed column shift.

"Cuda 340/383", actual real things.

Prior pages pitched Formula S, Road Wheels (recall wheels), and numerous options.

I always liked that look. But looked strange on 1st Gen Camaro like the top should go all the way to the side. But looks and fits the 69 Barracuda lines.

Wow. Never heard of this option before, but that's pretty hip for Chrysler to offer a vinyl top style based off a popular haircut of the time.

That's just groovy, man. bow
