heel pad location?

heel pad location? - 04/14/09 12:57 AM

Where should the heel pad be located in relation to the gas pedal on a B body? This is for a 69 Road Runner. Does anyone have a picture?

Thanks

My search abilities is not so good with this search engine we have.

I forgot to ask also, Is there two holes in the carpet for the accelerator pedal or a square cut out?

Thanks again...

The accelerator pedal is located in the corner of the heel pad. There is a square cut out the size of the part that sticks out from the bottom of the accelerator pedal in the upper far right of the vinyl part and a loose, hard white foam rectangular spacer that goes under the carpet around the cutout. You have to place your carpet so that the accelerator pedal lines up with the heel pad and then make the carpet fit from there.

So the hole is made into the heel pad itself for the pedal assy.

Yes RoadRunnerJD is correct. the finished look is the pedal pad is squared up on the top right edge of the heel pad. seen a lot that were incorrect.

Thanks I seen a lot of carpets with the heel pad not even touching the pedal assy so I was not sure.

OK, so let me OT this a little..

Do you apply the carpet under or over the throttle cable bracket that mounts to the inside of the firewall?

Same for the steering column bracket?

Doing carpet in my car now.. Thanks for the tip of the gas pedal install.. I wondered where the white gasket in my seal kit went.....

I think it's slit? I have an original carpet out of my low milage RR. I saved it for a template. If not tonight, I'll pull it ot sometime this week and take a photo of the driver's side configuration.

I did not keep my original like I thought I did. I dug it out but only had the rear half for some reason? However, I cut mine to match the original and took a couple of pictures. The rod goes thru the carpet with a minimal size hole and the carpet is slit where the accelerator cable attaches to the pedal. You may have to cheat a little on fitting the gas pedal in the exact corner of the heel pad if you don't have enough carpet on the sides to cover your rockers...or send it back and tell them they did not give you enough on the edges. Mine was also tight where the front half meets the rear carpet. You have to make sure it covers the rear edge too before you start cutting holes in the front carpet.

There is no grommet over the dimmer switch hole from the factory even if one comes with the new carpet unless you just really want to use the grommet.

I’m taking my time doing this but I can tell I ‘m going to grow tired of doing it real soon.

But basically from what you guys are telling me I make sure I have enough carpet by doing a trial fit. Then I cut the hole for the accelerator pedal assembly in the heel pad, and the all the other holes and cut points on the carpet are in reference to this.

Here is how I'm doing my holes...

I use an ice pick and poke around to find the bolt hole.

Then when I located my hole I get a piece of metal tubing the right size and heat it up with a torch.

Get ready to insert…

Insert..

Wham there you go. No fraying to worry about and a perfect hole.

On some of the holes I go from the bottom, with the carpet layed where I want it I heat the ice pick and poke up from the bottom bolt hole. It goes thru like a tooth pick going thru paper.

Its a good thing I saw this as I was going to slit the carpet all the way up.

Just for reference in case anyone should need it lets say you mess up cutting a hole or in the future someone drops a cigarette on the carpet.

Not saying I fudged up.

Cut out a patch from the excess carpet…

Place in the same grain pattern as the original…

Use carpet tape, sorry did not have any so I used duct tape. A product that works well too is called shoe goo. Comes in a tube and the patch won't disappear if someone gets too vigorous with a vacuum.

Where is the hole?

While we are doin carpet a couple of additional questions..

where to you cut the carpet under the kick panels?? How much length under them??

AND where do you cut the carpet at the door area under the sills?/ To the pinchweld or up over it a bit?/ Thanks

Re: heel pad location? - 04/23/09 07:51 AM

I just cut mine today and it was to the pinchweld, the sill plate would not sit correctly over the carpet with the carpet over the top of the pinchweld. Make sure to have plenty of sharp clean razors as it cuts the carpet cleanly. They get dull really fast.

Thanks Allen.. Yeah I have noticed how fast the razor blades dull.... To the pinchweld it is..
