Ignition 71 340 swinger electronic or point? - 04/06/09 02:59 AM

Trying to confirm what ignitions systems would have came out in the Canadian 340 71 Darts. I am in restoring mine and trying to make it as correct as possible. I know there was a shift in 71 340 to electronic and was wondering if anyone never the exact time line. thanks

Not 100% so wait for more opinions, but the engine color changed from orange to blue in late March to around the first or second week of April, and i think most were points till the very end of production in 71, and electronic was a option, maybe made it to some very late 71's as standard?

you should be able to find the screw holes on your left hand inner fender perhaps?(i assume thats where it was)
i know a 71 cuda that i sold for a friend had on the bottom of the build sheet "special order electronic ignition"
engine harness still there or it it gone?

no screw holes in my inner, of course when I bought the car it was a mess. It has electronic ignition mounted on the firewall. I bought a oem wiring harness for a 71 340 demon and it is point ignition. thanks

Do you have a Broadcast Sheet or a fender tag? If so what is the Scheduled Production Date?

Although I've heard that the changeover might have taken place around the same time as the engine color (late March, Early April) some factory literature shows that the "official" date was (if I am remembering correctly) May 21- June 1 which is the generally accepted running changover date.

where were modules actually mounted in the engine bay. Does anyone have any pics of the 71 demon engine bays with electronic?

I cant seem to locate it right now, but I have a factory memo dated 5/14/71 that states "effective 5/17/71 all 340 manual trans equipped vehicles will have Electronic Ignition System N23".
Whether it actually took place then, I am not certain and no mention is made of automatic 340's.

I have a 71 Road Runner that has a SPD of 7/7/71. I'll be darned if I can find any evidence of it ever having electronic ignition.

I think I am going to go with a point ignition system as there seems to be enough documentation to make me think it would be correct. thanks

And that is probably the right assumption.

agreed, you're safe with the points as this bulletin dated May 6,71 doesn't actually state when the change was to take place.

Finally we got a hold of a owner of a survivor 71 340 4 speed canadian swinger. His is basicly untouched and his is a point ignition car, dual point distributor. thanks for all the input.

Re: Ignition 71 340 swinger electronic or point? - 04/07/09 11:39 PM

There were two batchs of Swingers made with 340's in 71 aprox 50 were plain jane swinger specials and were sold by a dealership in Edmonton Alberta Crosstown Motors, these had a build date of May 7 1971 and 25 were sold in Regina Sask Crestview motors. These had the H2XW interiors and some chrome trim added and these had a build date of May 13. The fellow with the survivor car has a Crestview car and mine is a Crestview car both with build dates of May 13. thanks

That sounds like good reasoning. What is the source of the above information?

A fellow by the name of Dan Rasmussen did the majority of research on these cars. About 8 years ago I bought my dart in Edmonton, started research and collecting data and came across Dan, at this point he was getting into E bodys and out of the A bodys so I bought a donor car from him and his research. I have a registry on these cars and friend who purchased a rare 72 340 Dart have been playing with this ever since. A fellow named Franco has a nice article on them, maybe alittle out dated, here is the link http://www3.sympatico.ca/f.bevil/71Swinger340.html
which hopefully I did correctly. I believe out of the 65 - 75 71 darts made there are aprox 21 that we know of still living. thanks

Very cool info! I had heard of the 71 340 Swingers, but have never seen one until now. One question I have, was there ever a 70-71 Scamp 340 made in Canada? I can recall seeing a white 71 Scamp around 1979 that had twin scoops and a 340. Unfortuneatly I did not get the VIN since I had just had my 69 Dart GTS for a year at that point.
