Dash Radio Jamb Nuts - 03/16/21 07:57 PM

They say the devil is in the details. I am getting ready to put the dash in my 67 Coronet Convertible. I started looking for the jamb nuts to attach the radio to the dash thru the knobs. I only had 1 nut. So I have tried hardware stores, auto parts stores, electrical supply houses and local friends. No one has these nuts. My last choice is to try to go to the local wrecking yards to find it. But it is unlikely they will have any cars old enough that still have these type f radios. Does anyone have any idea where I can get these nuts (see photo attached)?

Lots of electrical test equipment like meters, with rotary knobs use such nuts. But be aware; there are many variants with such nuts. Namely exact diameter & thread pitch.

another place to try would be mcmaster-carr or grainger.
but as stated, you would need to know the thread pitch of the nuts.

Went through that search myself and was able to find a pair of OEM on eBay.

I tried Grainger but not McMaster-Carr. What did you search for on Ebay? Radio nuts? Jamb nuts? Panel nuts? I always end up with a bunch of extraneous items whenever I look for something on Ebay. Based on what I tried at Lowes it is 1/2 x 20 thread, a fine thread.

That 1/2-20 is a problem. If it was 1/2-28, they are every where.

Wide selection of 1/2-20 nuts at McMaster Carr, search jamb nuts, type in 1/2-20 thread in the size box, even left handed 1/2-20 jamb nuts are available, when you click on a product number the "product description" text will pop up, you can then check the height specs of the assorted nuts offered as well as material or country of origin

I tried McMaster-Carr. They had the nuts but they were 5/16" thick. I need 1/8" thick. I appreciate the help. If anyone has any other ideas I would appreciate it.

3/16" (.186) thick do the trick?... vs 1/8 (.125), .062 (1/16") difference?

Did more looking, what you want by description is a "panel nut", not a jamb nut....

Look in the lamp section at the hardware store. The threaded tube used to attach bulb sockets on lamps uses the same nut

Try these guys, https://rainbowboltsupply.com/ I have had very good luck with them on finding odd and off size nuts and bolts.

Re: Dash Radio Jamb Nuts - 03/23/21 03:45 PM

Thanks. I tried panel nuts and found the 1/2 x 28 x 3/16" nuts. But I need 1/2 by 20. So still doesn't work. Also, the last time I went to junk yards out here (4-5 years ago) they didn't have any cars from the 60's and 70's. There weren't as nearly many of those cars out here and people are now holding on to them.

Try hitting some thrift shops or antique malls. You may find some 70s/80s aftermarket radios with the same nuts.

I'd just buy the 5/16" pieces that are the correct thread. Then machine down the thickness until it's a size that will work.

He'd have a better head start with the 3/16" thick nuts... smile
