K - frame powder coat? - 01/16/20 05:28 PM

Which is better: paint or powder coating the K frame? I know powder coat is more durable, but is it good enough for a resto or does it not give a correct appearance? I have tried searching this subject, but can't find anything on it. I'm positive it has been discussed before. Opinions???

It's been one of my have to do processes for years. You can have it blasted and powder coated for similar money as painting and if done in a low gloss or semi gloss it looks great IMHO.

Though I love oem restorations, on suspension parts, I'll always go with powder coat. In the long run, it's cheaper and less time consuming. Not to mention the durability.

Who is the build for? You or a certain audience? I have done both on my cars over the years. The powder coat certainly has some advantages, but it doesn't quite look the same as paint. But then, it is difficult to get today's paint to not gloss too much for an OE look. As we add flattening agent (which is white) the black gets less black. But either way, although not 'correct', very few individuals would know the difference given it's location.

You'll want to have it hot tanked to get any oil out of the seams.

Powdercoating is ok, but not indestructible.like some people think it is. I have owned bike frame that have been powdercoated and they still get stone chips in the finish.
