E Body center console: OEM plastic color question?

I have had a E Body black center console sitting on a shelf for 30 years. I decided to look it over and I noticed the black is worn off on some high spots, and it looks like some sort of khaki or greenish color underneath. Can anyone tell me if the console plastic was painted from the factory, or were different colors of plastic used? Thanks in advance.

The center speaker grills were also molded in different colors. However, mine has evidence of paint on the underside. When you scratch it, it's blue underneath. Dad bought the car new so I know 100% that this is the grill the car was born with. Weird.

Not weird to me, if the line needed a (name your color) speaker and were short, and/or had excess of another color, paint will keep the line moving. It’s not the preferred method of manufacture but a reality of all assembly lines. Keep it moving and don’t throw things away

The main reason I had any doubt about the factory painting plastic versus it being done later by someone else is the paint job was pretty high quality. It bonded well and looked good. No runs or sags and all of the texture of the plastic was still very well defined. I wouldn't expect that from most backyard paint jobs on parts that would take a considerable amount of prep work and skill to do a convincing job where the plastic didn't look painted. I would guess certain kinds of paint are one key to a good looking job.

Absolutely, SEM color coat series is a flexible paint that sprays a very atomized coat that does not fill in the fine detail's in interior parts. Also very atomized is their adhesion promoter for vinyls. Clean, clean, and clean some more, spray with adhesion promoter, then with color coat (color of your choice).

From your OP it sounds like you may be trying to redo a colored piece in black, I'd try to find a chemical stripper to get the old paint off first.

Are you sure something khaki colored didn't rub on the console leaving some behind.

Yes, I'm 100% positive the khaiki or greenish color is under the black.

I did wonder if there was anyway to strip the paint off, but I'm not going to bother. I was actually selling it, and just wanted to know so I could accurately and honestly describe it. Back in the day I spent all my time under the hoods and chassis of these cars, guess I didn't pay too much attention to the cockpit details.
