Original Mr. Norm's Trunklid Decal

Original Mr. Norm's Trunklid Decal - 02/20/19 09:48 PM

For the Mr. Norm's enthusiasts here. I have an original GSD trunk lid decal. I hadn't seen another quite like it but recently came across an eBay auction from late last year with what appears to be a very similar style.

The colors are quite different from the colors used on the reproductions. There are some other minor differences in the design as well (as to be expected I suppose).

Does anyone have pics of GSD survivor cars showing the trunk lid decal or any original-era NOS decals they can share? I wonder if the decals changed much from year to year?

Pics of my original (not for sale). The last one is with the flash on.

Picture of a probable survivor grabbed from the interweb a long time ago. Did the white "Grand Spaulding" and dealership address dissolve away, or was it designed with a clear window (so the car color would show through)?

Reproduction bought back when Jim Bodanis resurrected the Mr. Norm's Club (late 90s?)

Another original found with Google Image Search from a 1967 Coronet.

Here's one from an article online. Car owner had original stickers collected back in the day. He used one on his restored Dart. Very similar to the reproductions in layout, but the ram's head and "Dodge" letters are more of a glossy yellow, while the repros use a matte gold. Note the registered trademark symbol on this one and the reproductions.

Hey Bruce, do you have Barry's 174 mile T/A pictures DVD? That was a Mr Norms car and there were pictures of its dealer sticker.
When I was getting to the home stretch on my Mr Norms T/A project, I looked in my folder of small decals I'd gathered over all the years I'd been working on the project etc, and there were 3 Mr Norms trunk decals I'd gathered over time. I chose the one that seemed to look closest to the one on the 174 mile T/A. One thing on the one I used, the white is reflective whereas on the other 2 I had, it was not.
Is it an original or a repro? I don't know. I am sure I bought at least one of these stickers back in the 90s when Larry Weiner first started selling Mr Norms swag. But was everything he had from the inventory that was in the building across the street from the showroom, or were some items already repros he or someone else were making?

Another thing to mention, is that I am sure there were several vendors and probably several design variations over the 60s and 70s when Mr Norms was in operation.
I know for a fact the sticker was different between what was on my car when I bought it in the late 70s and what I have on it now.
The sticker on my car said Chicago-Buffalo Grove. I recall back in the 90s talking to Larry, and I asked if he had any dealer stickers that had Buffalo Grove on them for my '70 Challenger. Larry told me that my car wouldn't have had sticker with Buffalo Grove on it, Mr Norm didn't open that 2nd location in Buffalo Grove (A Chicago suburb) until later, '71 or 72?
So my car must have been sold by Mr Norms at least twice. New, and later used, when they put the sticker on that said Buffalo Grove! My car wasn't sold new until February 71, so was the new location open by then, and if so, were the stickers with 2 locations used then? None of the original sales paperwork I bought mentions any address other than Chicago though.
That decal was lost in the early 80s when I first had the car repainted. Sadly I don't have a close up picture, it really didn't mean anything to me at the time!

Here's a picture of the one on my car showing the reflective quality.

Very cool. Thanks Brad! I see that a fair amount of the survivor examples show a lot of black around the “Dodge” part and most don’t have the registered trademark symbol. The eBay one has the area where the horns curl fully blacked out, which is another variation.
