What wheels and tires originally came on my E body

What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/20/19 06:37 PM

Hello,
JS27UOB 1970 Dodge Challenger Convertible.
No build sheet, only fender tag info(2 tags).
BUT, this car has about every option available in 1970.
Had Rally 14's on it when I bought it.
Thought maybe an expert may have a good guess.

Thanks

Guesses are just that.

Do you have any reason to suspect that the 14" Rallyes are not original to the car?

Your wheels should have parts numbers and date codes stamped on them. They appear around the valve stem hole. You should inspect them to help determine if they are possibly original to your car. Your spare tire configuration and date codes may also lend some useful information.

August 69 and early September 69 wheels do not have part numbers

Yes this car is an early build in September.
The wheels are nicely painted, but I don’t see any numbers.
The wheels have old Polyglas goodyears, probably from the 90’s.
I’m getting ready to replace them, so maybe there are numbers inside the rims..

Came with space saver spare, as well.

Not at this time. I figured when I replace the tires, soon, I will be able to investigate further.

You never know,my Hemi R/T came with what you see,14"with full covers. This was back in the 80's,came from original owner bought local.

there are NO documented HEMI E-bodies with factory installed 14" wheels/tires

FLPlum how original is the car? there are a number of clues that could help narrow down the original configuration, but without documentation you can't be 100% sure & a lot can change in the past ~50 years.

Can you post a picture of your space saver and measure the length of the rod that holds the spare tire down?

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/22/19 03:45 AM

This chart is why I grapple with what I should have on mine.
So you figure back in the day you would order 440, AC, power top, 8 track, luggage rack, rocker moldings, black hood treatment, but skimp on the wheels. I just can’t figure.
Thanks for the chart it is very interesting.

I put on 15” and radials for driving. The 14” that came on the car are in my garage. They have 20 year old polyglas on them.
I want to go back to original, so I thought another opinion here would push me in the right direction.
Both sizes are rally.

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/22/19 06:30 AM

How original is the car?
red brake drums?
original transmission? what speedometer pinion?
what axle?
has the front end been rebuilt?

very few 15" wheel convertibles, especially at the beginning of the year

the 14" "ROAD" wheels are the more expensive OPTION, but the "RALLYE" wheels were NEW for the '70 model year

I'd determine the dates on the 14" wheels and POLYGLAS tires (as well as the specifics of your spare) - how many miles were on it when & what year did you purchase the car?

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/22/19 06:35 AM

Wheels-steel
Tires-Goodyear
This we know for sure.

Correct dated wheels could have been swapped on by chance, or the owner seeked them out. Just no way to really know wothout paperwork.

I understand that, but by the '80s lots happened to these cars, like a second set for the winter? F60-15s were STANDARD & there were no OPTION for other tires available for a HEMI E-body. To claim your old car was different from all the rest, the burden of proof is on you!

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/22/19 03:58 PM

Dealerships would also do a lot to appease customers.
An original owner of a 70 Cuda 340 contacted me years back looking for a spacesaver spare for his car.
He told me, that when he took delivery he told the dealership salesman he wanted a conventional spare after seeing that 'donut' in the trunk.
They gladly did so.
My hometown dealership changed out a set of 14 inch rallyes off a new 72 Cuda replacing them with 14 inch magnums from a 72 Satellite because the then purchaser of the new Satellite, a former school classmate of mine, liked the rallye wheel look.
So occasionally, changes happened to new cars at dealerships before they even left the lot.

Not trying to prove anything, only thing I know is what I had and what the original owner had.Knew of the car since new and had always been the way I bought it. I sold car in July of 81,the fellow that bought it sold it mid 90's in same condition as picture, never finished and it went to Florida,at this point it doesn't matter and I could care less.

Another clue could be that if your lower control arms have a spacer underneath the rebound bumper. If so that would indicate 15 inch wheels. If there's no spacer it would indicate 14 inch wheels.

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/23/19 12:41 AM

OK, I went out in the garage and pulled the trim ring off the 14” rally?
Per your date wheel mine is
Month 8.
Day27.
Part number 2944252.
It has been painted, I can’t tell the plant, it is blurry.
With car build date late September, I think these rallys could be original to car.what is your opinion.
Is there no year stamp?

Quote:
Part number 2944252
is a 1970 & 1971 14x5.5" Rallye wheel.

The year designator is under the plant code.

M is Motor Wheel.

Check another wheel if you can not read the one you checked?

Photos can help also.

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/24/19 06:35 PM

Anybody want to decode my Goodyear polyglas tires date.
Obviously these are at least 25 years old, or more. I am going to put new ones on my wheels, but I thought it would be interesting to know how old they are.
Stamp code is:
CYLD B5KL056.
Thanks

Re: What wheels and tires originally came on my E body - 02/24/19 07:19 PM

CYLD B5KL056

CY = manufacturer = McCREARY Tire, Indiana PA
LD = size = F70-14
B5KL = type = fiberglass-belted w/RWL
056 = date = 05th week of 1996

Thanks so much.
I don’t think they have any value, and they are way too old to drive on
Now on to why it won’t start. Starts with priming carb, but stops when fuel is used from priming.
Won’t start unless primed.
I started a new thread over in the general area.
Thanks.

This happens more than people think. If you have ever worked at a new car dealership service department you will know this is not at all unusual.

The dates on the wheels for this Challenger convertible are really nice and everyone is warm and fuzzy, thats great. But is doesn’t prove what it came with from the factory with. How many years have people been seeking out proper dated parts for these cars? How many cars had custom wheels on day 2?

Absolutely,
I have the car traced back to 1973.
Before that, who knows.
Although it was pretty original when I bought it in 2000.

So true.

My friend has a 1970 FC7 hemicuda that was ordered with Leather interior and passenger side chrome mirror.

He has the order form. Well the factory did not install these items.

So when the car delivered the guy that ordered it complained. The dealer had the mechanic go out on to the lot and removed a passenger side mirror from another car and installed it one the hemicuda with WOOD SCREWS.

They deducted from the invoice LESS THAN the actual cost of the leather interior.

My friend has all the paperwork and it just amazing that this happened.
