69 roadrunner vs. gtx dash cluster question - 02/05/19 05:02 AM

A friend and I are having a debate over a part on our dash. I have a 69 roadrunner, he has a 69 GTX. My car has the plastic chrome bezel that goes around the speedometer cluster and his does not. He is claiming cause my car was the roadrunner, that my car got it while his car got a aluminum trim piece that went across the underside of the top of the metal dash frame.

Can anyone help settle this debate? His car does not have that plastic chrome bezel around the speedometer cluster.

Makes sense that the GTX would not have the plastic chrome across the top as the GTX dash trim covers it. My original GTX bezel is not chromed.......which brings up the question "how did you two get to debating this chrome/not chrome bezel when you can't see the not chromed bezel top on the GTX with it covered by the GTX trim grin wink just a little fun and joking there, not meaning anything by it up

Mike

My Y2 Sunfire 4-spd GTX with no top chrome bezel....and don't forget the GTX bezel is completely different than the Road Runners in that it has a 15/150 MPH readout versus the RR's 120 MPH so it's easy to leave it un-chromed (pennies savings too) for the GTX in the first place

Thanks for the response A12. There is a separate chrome plastic trim that goes around the entire speedo cluster in my roadrunner. His car does not have this plastic trim piece like mine does. The speedometer lens appears to be the only thing that is different in the cluster like as you said, the 120 vs the 15/150 number lay out.

I can't speak to the GTX but I can tell you that on the chrome trim the underside of that top piece is painted semi-gloss black to blend in with the dash. The only chrome showing will be the same narrow band around the entire cluster.

Your friend is correct. I have had several of both cars, this is how they are, and how my 69 GTX is now.

Interesting. Here I thought I was right as I've seen those chrome plastic surrounds listed in catalogs and on ebay as being for both the Roadrunner and the GTX. Just goes to show that you have to do your research with everything !

Hey A12
Did you notice on the photo of your GTX dash your Speedo plastic is 1-15 but your speedometer tic marks are 1-12?

shock Matt, thanks for pointing that out but fortunately for me that's NOT MY GTX speedometer cluster in the photo above. I found that image in a folder from a few years ago and you can see the credit goes to the info on the bottom of the image scope I wish I had that few of miles on my odo but I getting close to rolling the odometer over and starting over again. This was years ago on MY GTX when it had 93,000 on it. I did count the tic marks and I think they are correct for a 150 speedometer. I never noticed that before, thanks for pointing it out..........but for sure that's my Y2 Sunfire GTX in the other image wink

My GTX has so many original miles on it that the shifter ball has the embossed shift pattern almost completely worn away drive but I'm not going to replace it, adds character and I've memorized the shift pattern grin laugh2

LOL !! At Carlisle a couple years back I bought a cluster with the 150 lense for $40.. Who wouldn't jump on that !! Only later did I notice it was actually a 120 speedo. No big deal - I still got $100. for the lense.
