1971 383 colors - 02/04/19 05:36 AM

Let's say there's a Satellite Sebring with a 383. What color should the engine be?

I'm guessing blue for the 2bbl. and orange for the 4bbl.? Thank you!

Why the change from the high-compression years?

Re: 1971 383 colors - 02/04/19 06:47 AM

Not sure a 383 4-bbl was available in a Sebring.
I had an L code 383 2-bbl Sebring and it was blue.
Had an N code 383 4-bbl HP Sebring Plus and it was orange.

71 383 N-code’s are orange in B and E bodies

Not sure what C-body 383 4 bbl are painted? Or if there are two versions of that?

Re: 1971 383 colors - 02/04/19 08:34 AM

in a B and/or E-body for 1971 (much simplified VS. 1970)

L-code 383 2bbl = corporate blue
N-code 383 4bbl = street HEMI orange

Doesn't a 1971 N 383 come with a Holley? They had the service bulletin to change to a Carter.

yes, it is common to see Carters where Holleys were originally due to the transfer tube seals leaking

is there a bulletin on this? shruggy

383's weren't Hemi orange. Wedge engines were a different shade, same as air cleaner tops.

As far as I've always known wedge and Hemi's were Hemi Orange. Now earlier in Hemi life I believe 66 and back were Race Hemi Orange which was a lighter shade. I'm not a Hemi expert but remember something like that.

When Direct Connection was selling engine paint in the early '80s they had one orange.
I bought some and painted my 440, it looked great.
Thought it was the correct color for a '71 engine.
Several years later it was disclosed that it was just a little lighter than Hemi Orange, and was in fact Max-Wedge orange.
I never heard that Hemis and wedges were different oranges, at least in '69-'71.

I think Frank Baldason knows what he is talking about. He is the one that said wedges are different. It all boils down to what you are looking for, correct, or just orange.

Hey Eric. wave
I'm just going by Galen's book. So what is the scoop? Did they all come with Holleys?

Here's a picture of my 1971 cuda 383 engine compartment just after I got it around 1988. The engine had never been out, around 86k miles. Kind of hard to see but on the front of the drivers side valve cover under the grease is a hint of the original orange paint. It also had the original 4668 Holley sitting under the air cleaner.

I didn't know it either until I was buying the paint and asked him the difference.

Here is a good picture of the difference in race hemi orange and street hemi orange. The race hemi orange is a 64 426 max wedge and the street is my 69 GTS 383. wave
