69 GTX wheel options

69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 12:57 AM

I have a 69 GTX that I've had since the mid eighties that has never had broadcast sheet but does have the fender tag. 440 4 Speed track pack car. What would be the most likely wheels it would have come with?

A 440 car built in October only came with 14x5.5" beyond that it's impossible to tell. To new to have 15x6 recall wheels.

Nice options & colors

If it still has its original brake drums, you could look for traces of red paint on them, which would indicate Road Wheels, aka Magnum 500s...though I never found any on a '69 I had that had its original Road Wheels...

Also see if there are original painted "pin stripes" 1/4 down from the top body line. That may tell you the tire configuration.

It does still have some of the white pin stripes by the lower body line but none 1/4 way down the body.

How would a stripe tell you what kind of wheels were on the car from the factory.
I owned 3 69 GTX's and I don't know what stripe you are talking about.

V6W is white tape stripe at the rocker panel in the black organisol area on a GTX that runs wheel well to wheel well.

Didn’t wht mean wht wall tires and red pinstripe for redlines on that lower stripe. But wouldn’t tell you if a road wheel or steel

Sometimes they write the spare tire size on the underside of the decklid

Most likely it's a 14" Road Wheel car

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 05:24 AM

My '69 LA built and LA area sold (still has an "Al's Automotive Norwalk, CA decal on the driver's vent window from service there. Has a phone number with NO area code so it must be from back in the day?) It's a 4-speed 3.54 Dana with a white pinstripe on under the GTX trim and it has it's original date coded "road wheels" (aka Magnum 500).......but they are stored in the garage now for the TT's on it now. I'm guessing your GTX had road wheels too. (1.) When I bought it, in the seller's driveway. (2.) after I got it home and after paint. (3.) with the current Torque Thrusts.

neither color stripe dictated what color stripe wheels a car had

Dan did optional wheels only show up on a broadcast sheet and or Monroney/window sticker in '69 (and other years)?

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 07:11 AM

Most likely all you can do is guess what wheels it came with. There is no proof at this point. Mostly likely is not reality. Just because it's a GTX doesn't mean it came with the optional wheels.

My B7 Hemi GTX had a white lower pinstripe and according to the trunk lid had white stripe tires FWIW. I don't think they were linked though.

Pretty much the way mine came right there less the elephant. I really prefer the steel wheels and dog dishes but was just curious if the wheels option could be different from 4 speed to auto or even difference plants. Also did they come with 15" wheels if they weren't an ordered car?

BTW thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate hearing from the gurus.😉

YES

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 07:53 AM

Wow, hardly have ever seen these wheel covers on a GTX except some of the hemi cars. Hell I thought Mags were factory when I was younger, all I ever saw on them back then😂

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 08:01 AM

the almost 30% dog dish GTXs were most probably instantly changed to CRAGARs or other mag wheels of the day

non-"recall" wheel 440 cars are exclusively 14"

It is the stripe that runs from the top front of the fender to the rear quarter extensions not the lower stripe. It was affected by the tire not the wheel.

My A34 69 GTX came with 14" redline tires and the Plymouth division wheel covers.

the painted V7_ "accent stripe" was NOT available on a GTX - it was available in 5 colors: RED, WHITE, BLUE, GREEN & BLACK

they were STANDARD on Sport Satellite (RP)
and an additional cost $15.15 OPTION on Satellite (RH) & Road Runner (RM)

V7_ had nothing to do with the tire choice alien

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 06:23 PM

440 steel wheels were 14x5.5"
HEMI steel wheels were 15x6.0"

"ROAD" wheels were 14x5.5" (440 ONLY)
"RECALL" wheels were 15x6.0"

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 08:28 PM

Yes, so a 440 gtx made after August 1968 had 14X5.5" wheels. Period

Any GUESSES as to what type is only a guess. Could be any available wheel tire combo.

The stripes don't have anything to do with it.

Re: 69 GTX wheel options - 11/21/18 08:57 PM

an August 1968 W23 recall wheel 440 '69 GTX would have 15x6.0" wheels (F70-15 tires) when assembled, but should not have been SOLD NEW with them.

I see we're saying the same thing, I missed the "after August"

Well learned something new today.

However on my two Lynch Road Superbees the early car does not have it and the later one does. Odd.

Maybe a previous owner removed it because they thought it was graffiti shock wink JK

My Lynch Road '69 A12 RR still has it, but you can barely read the "G" and the 15" wheel size frown
