A-body 3 speed manual on column verses floor

A-body 3 speed manual on column verses floor - 11/13/18 03:45 AM

What dictated whether the shifter was on the floor or column on an A-body standard shift car.
I am talking a 318 or 6 cylinder car.
Was it a 6 verses the small V-8 thing or could either be in year verses year.

1969 back - column only.

When the A230 came on the scene for the 1970 model year, it had a shift mounting pad for the floor shifter - D13 on the fender tag for the transmission code.

You could get 1970 A's with a 3-speed stick with /6, 318 & 340.

Thanks Barry...reason I ask is today in a yard I saw a 72 Duster 6 cyl standard that had a column shifter.
Cant figure that one, column looked original to car and car has been there 20 years.

Floor shift in 3-speed As began with the 1970 model year, but column shift was still available for /6 & 318.

More details for '72 at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/imag...t_Duster_21.jpg

I am still working on a very detailed D13 article for HH, but things are progressing quite nicely. :-)

Thats an impressive collection.
So if I read the HH for 1972 correctly
on the 6 cyl Duster, 3 speed manual on column was standard equipment
and manual floor shift for same was available at extra cost.

Back in 75 I test drove a 71 Duster plaine Jain with a 318 4 speed and a 8 3/4. Years later I got the motor, trans, clutch linkage and rear axle asm. from the yard it went to.
I always thought it was odd that the car got a 4 speed and 8 3/4 with the 318.

Terry, that is correct.

Iowan, my 1970 Valiant 4-door with a 318 & 3-speed stick also has the 8 3/4 with a 3.23 & it is VERY fun to drive.

I had a 68 Dart 270 4-door 273 2-bbl 4-speed with an 8-3/4, sold it to Bill Reilly of Alterkation fame, hope he did something with it... luck
