small block valve cover gasket question

small block valve cover gasket question - 03/12/09 03:12 PM

What kind of material was used on the small block valve cover gaskets? I am working on a 70 chally convert and the fel pro engine rebuild gasket kit that I got has what seems to be rubber valve cover gaskets. I would like to use whatever the factory used since it is going to be a factory appearing car. My initial thought was that they were cork originally? Am I wrong in my thought? Also, the tabs that stuck through were probably engine color as I would have to assume that they were on the engine prior to it being painted.

Thanks,

Brian

Black rubber was factory and anything left exposed once installed got painted along with the rest of the engine

I had a problem with the felpro rubber valve cover gaskets sealing.
I changed them out for the cork and rubber ones and it fixed it.

Yes, the rubber ones tend to leak pretty easily. I use some black RTV or black non hardening gasket sealer like Permatex on both sides and have had good luck keeping them sealed, goop on both sides can be a pain when you remove them because of all the extra clean up but they do seal nice that way. Once rubber gets a leak the oil will find the pathway and leak forever, tightening the bolts only makes it worse. It has to be VERY clean on all areas and have a nice even compression from bolt torque without over tightening to get a good seal.

I thought i read that the new silicone with the metal core is working well with some guys using the stock V/C's, i use the rubber ones but i have some M/T's covers on mine and you can crank them down very tight without worrying about warping the V/C's.

Try that with stock stamped steel valve covers and you'll get the results I described.

very true.

I run the MTs also wiit hthe rubber gasket. i run the rubber cause i have a solid cam and the rubber is better for removing VCs for lash adjustment. the corks gets hard and breaks after a short while.

Scott, have you ever tried this?A friend that has done nothing but bulid Mopar engines for the last 40yrs put me on to it.Use it for everything, and I mean everything. It not as slippy as most silicone's and it doesn't leak.It is aroung $6.00 a tube depending on your dealer,PT.# 82300234

i think thats the stuff Mopar recommends when using synthetic fluid in rear ends, the run of the mill silicon was not sealing the rear covers very good when filled with syn
