I think that Tom (R/T Specialties) was working on these. Maybe he will update us?

I'll take a car set if you or Tom can come up with a correct looking replacement.

I talked to Tom about those maybe just only 6 months ago - maybe more - and he said they weren't available... didn't mention working on them....

Yes, we NEED this part.

I brought this stuff to Tom's attention several years ago, he was trying to find the supplier.
I used this material when I restored my Challenger, you will need several kits, I ran the strips parallel to the plate, the adhesive is very strong, it is a little time consuming but looks nice, and works great.

Yes Jim, I would take a full set too if you can find the material. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything.

I think Funkbrothers was selling reconditioned ones on ebay a while back but I would not buy from them and I just need the fuzz and not the whole bracket.

How much material do they give you?

It LOOKS close.

I never knew they were that hard to find in good shape used ? The ones on my Challenger were mint but my car has been off the road since 86. Junkyard should be loaded with small parts like that cuz the B-C Body car had some of the same ones.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 03/11/09 05:40 PM

The problem is when they get old they get flat and dirt, grit gets in them. That is what caused some of the vertical scratches on the side windows.

James
here is a pic of what you get, 8", as mentioned in my earlier post you will need 2 kits.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 03/11/09 09:37 PM

They used two different materials (maybe more??)
On the ones I have (some from my original 1971 doors, some from donor doors of another year) it happens that the different materials are on the two different types of the brackets. So it could be a 'type of bracket' thing, or a 'depends on year' thing

Either way, these are definitely different material - one is more 'hairy' (right)and one is more 'fuzzy' (left)

I think you can see both in the above posted pics, as well as my pic below.
If you need to see the detail click on the attachment to get the full sized pic, it is pretty clear.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 03/12/09 02:34 AM

Which is what year? Are these from E bodies? Are the other "bodies" the same material?

Also looks like theres a backing on the hair ones that wrap around the bracket.

Is that hair one in the one picture removed from the bracket? If so can you lay it out flat and take a picture and some measurements? I found a company that ACTUALLY makes the stuff but they have MASSIVE minimums.

Also how "tall" is the hair on each? Have a set of calipers to measure accurately?

Bump for some measurements. Also if anyone has any other body window guides with pics and measurements I'd be interested.

Couple samples I have comming.

This modern stuff is actually Florine or Teflon instead of the old, scratchy polypro or nylon fibers.

Also noteworthy Jim... some of these have a
soft rubber cushion glued under them as well.

have a collection of those I could borrow Rick?

Thin rubber I can supply. I could laser cut pieces to shape that would have to be stacked/assembled to get the desired effect. I've found an industrial green-black 3M contact cement that works WELL at assembling foams and rubbers.

That black material looks like 20oz black/plush comercial carpet with unitairy backing. used tons of it in hotels ect for the sides of halways where they had a patterned carpet in the center ect.
I have some 32oz here but it would be way thicker
I wonder if a carpet mill would make some with just the primary back instead of the primary and secondairy backs

Jim, yes these are all for a Challenger. The fuzzy ones are off my 71, the hairy ones I can't be sure - they were either also off my 71 or off the donor doors which were not 71 (don't know if they were 70, 72, 73 or 74 - I suspect 70)

On BOTH types the backing material wraps around the brackets - you can see it on the fuzzys in the pic if you look carefully

Yes I still have those and certain I have some material removed from the brackets, I am happy to take some pics of that and measurements too as soon as I get a chance (hopefully tonight!)

I'm really glad to see discussion on this topic. I was wondering where I was going to find this stuff. I'm restoring a 70 Challenger R/T that has the same problem that everyone else.

I'm extremely interested in the out come of this! I'll buy the material when it's ready.

Thanks,

If anyone can contribute a picture (with a scale besise the part for scaling refrence) I'd appreciate it.
Also what year and model (I know there are other body styles than Cuda's and Challengers )

All these are from an original 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T door. I hope that this was what you were looking for

Thank you, timely revival of this topic. I need to reinstall my window parts shortly and had been wondering about this again.

BTW, I'll make sure to rub it on the old part first, to get the brand x cooties off before installing it.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 07/18/11 06:36 AM

Can someone please confirm one way or the other if these guides talked about in this thread were typically installed on '72-'74 E-bodies? I'm currently working on putting my '74 'Cuda back together, I have every single part that came off the car in little labeled bags, but it doesn't look like my car came with these. My original glass had bad scratches on it, maybe these were removed at some point? Technically though it looks like when adjusted properly it could do without them, so I'm confused. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yup, that's why your glass is scratched and why your glass rattles when you close your door. Got to use them. Easy to glue something on there that is better than glass on metal.

I just had to do set for a 70 vert I'm working on with new AMD glass. I used the thickest black teri cloth I could find. Was able to reuse the foam padding. Seems to work alright. This is in a high dollar resto-mod so I dought it will see alot of window action.

Has anyone tried stopping by a glass shop & seeing what the installers have... I recently did just that for my Falcon project & they had rolls of material with different types of black fur for window channels, guides & for making catwhiskers....

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 07/19/11 04:37 AM

Thanks for the responses guys. I did finally find mine, so they were there originally. All four were in the driver's side door bag, and I did the passenger's side first.

Part of the reason for the scratches on the original glass was I think from loose or broken parts. The passenger regulator was shot, and I know the glass was way loose. The driver's side slider (the big square metal part that bolts to the glass and hooks onto the rear track) was broken in two. That's why THAT side was loose and sloppy. It was originally spot welded together at the factory, and the spot welds were cold and just snapped at some point. I was able to join them together with a couple small machine screws and nuts. Now that this is bolted to the glass, there should be minimal stress on the screws, it should last forever. Also, the wear on these felt sliders indicates that they were put in crooked at the factory. I was able to wash and clean them up, and put them in straight, they seem to work as good or better than new.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 07/28/11 10:54 AM

I've thought about designing a spring loaded replacement for this "cheesy" Chrysler designed part. This way the window would always be under compression regardless of it's position on the track. There's no way to adjust these where they are in compression at all postions of the window up / down, therefore making the glass rattle when you slam the door. Matt @ MCB www.tuffwheelrestoration.com

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 07/28/11 10:40 PM

I better alternative would be a great idea..

When I looked into the material, the one manufacture I corresponded with said modern cars use a soft teflon based hairy material instead of the old nylon stuff that scratched the glass. Was hoping to get some of that to improve on the old design.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 07/29/11 12:49 AM

I believe these parts are more for additional strength for people who close the doors by the extended glass, rather than for holding it from rattling in the door. It seems that when the door is completely assembled and adjusted properly, that the belt weatherstripping holds it fairly tight from the inside and outside at the top, the mechanism doing this from the bottom, and the downstop preventing the glass from ever going below the belt weatherstripping. These felts, in addition to the felted rubber bumper on the outside are always just supporting the middle of the glass. Additionally, these felt brackets can be adjusted fairly tight due to the thickness of the felt, at least when that thickness is still there, before it's worn down.

My gut feeling after having taken every part out of the door, putting every part back in, and adjusting it properly, is that the factory did a pretty good job of engineering the window mechanisms.

Hoping by resurrecting the topic someone will have found a suitable material for use. Currently looking to redo my original window guides and could use a little help locating suitable fuzzy material.

Re: Anyone make E body side glass guide hairy felt? - 01/14/19 01:25 AM

Tom Race at RT Specialties remakes all the brackets with the fuzzy stuff on them. I've collected all the different brackets. Dont think he's making all the variations but the ones he is making will cover all the E body applications.
