Hemi Intake Bolt - 08/01/18 12:11 PM

Anyone know the month in 1968 when Chrysler made the change from allen-headed to hex-headed bolts on hemi engines
Thanks

My Charger was built September 67 and it has allen heads

First off I'll say "I don't know". But it did happen sometime mid year.

My best guesstimate would be January 68 which would coincide with the new 68 block castings being made (associated engine assembly parts might have been changed/upgraded at this same time).

My SPD 9/30/67 had allen heads, but the car was rubbed on from pretty much as soon as it came home according to a log the original owner kept.

The first Hemi installed at Lynch Road on 7/28/68 had (and still has) hex head bolts. Period.

You would think there would be a breaking point in a parts book when this part was changed but not likely with Chrysler. There also would be paper work sent to the plant of assembly but that was 50 years ago. The place were I worked in Automotive Production this process is called a PRN that tells of the change with process and part for the line worker. This creates a Breaking Point and that engine would of been written down with various information from it such as VON, SEQ, FON, VIN, plant, shift, time if that information was generate in the plant of change. Sometimes none of this stuff would of made a breaking point because it was an out of Assembly Plant change and the motor plant would of taken care of the change and might of not generated a breaking point parts book change.

My guess is it changed when they ran out of old bolts. When I restored a 65 vette it had the julian dated shocks on it with bolts that were wrong by ncrs records. Come on nobody changes all the bolts on the original shocks they where left over bolts from 64. Also had 2 different head marked bolts that could be used for bumpers right side had one left side had the other. It was whatever barrel they rolled out of stock when the ran out.

Thanks all!!

Just found reference in Dave Wise's B-body resto book that states 68's produced before October 1968 had allen intake bolts and after had hex. I think this is might be a misprint in the book since Oct 68 builds would be 69 production year. Maybe intended to say instead (also in agreement with Scott) "January 1968."

But I also agree with all that they probably used whatever they had on hand at the time so it would possibly vary car-to-car.

thanks again all!

So how does that help you, your making an assumption on the book error. Frankly you still do not really know.

I'm not sure what Dave's intent was but I can assure you that it was a mistake, no 68 vehicles where built in October of 68, 1968 production ended months before that.
