1965 Coronet A990 hood scoop placement

Where does the hood scoop on an A990 car sit in relationship to the back of the hood? Is the scoop flush with the back edge of the hood or does it sit slightly forward? Anyone have a good picture of an original car that shows the scoop location? I've found a lot of A990 pictures but most of them are 3/4 view shots from a lower angle. I haven't found a picture yet that shows the back of the scoop.

It varied a little Andy, from nearly flush to approx 3/8" from the rear of the hood edge. This is a 65, owner claimed it was original paint (and appeared to be). The seam sealer was also correct.

Thanks. I haven't seen the seam sealer before. Was that how the factory put them on? I don't think I'll use seam seal but I might cut some gaskets from thin rubber or some other material.
Any idea on which fasteners to use? The scoop I bought has fairly small holes in it for the bolts. I assumed the factory would use a 1/4-20 bolt with a captured washer but the scoop I bought looks like it needs 10-24 bolts. I doubt the factory used 10-24 but maybe they did? Just seems small for what the engineers were doing in 1965.

I talked to a local guy who has an original A990 car and he says that the bolts are 10-24. He sent me a picture showing 2.5 inch diameter washers under the bolt heads. I could fab some big washers but I'll probably just use fender washers and call it good.

Did he send you a picture of the hood location too? Out of curiosity did it have the seam sealer? Any chance you could posts pictures for posterity? Who's scoop did you go with and are you pleased with it?

The hood scoops were retained by J-bolts and bolts, center was supported by a long bolt with a metal sleeve over it with a washer at the top underside.

Original location on a 64 Hemi Dodge (65's were placed the same way).

Factory installation included the calking around the sides. This car had been re-painted.

I collect pictures of old drag cars and on the ones I have seen the scoop is flush or really close to it with the back of the hood.
The max wedge scoop is another story,,,but they are much farther forward

Not trying to cause a slap-fest, but I find it hard to believe Chrysler caulked the scoops; especially on cars where they spent so much effort on lightweight stuff, eliminating undercoating & seam sealers, etc.
Unfortunately the last original-paint A990 car I've seen was too long ago.
I'll check with someone who had one new and post that info later.
Be aware that there were 2 different shapes for similar-at-a-glance Hemi scoops: some have a taller front opening and taper more quickly to the rear; those seem to be exclusive to the '65 10"/15" AWB cars when they had carbs, but may have also been distributed/handed down for others.

64 aluminum Race Hemi and 65 steel Race Hemi scoops were identical other than the type of material, AFX cars might have had unique scooos, Ive never seen an original that was unaltered. 67 Hemi scoops look similar but were taller and shaped differently (straight accross the rear VS curved etc.). The calking on the blue example I posted the pic of was said to be original by the long time owner (I believe he said his father bought it new or soon after) who also claimed it was original paint (as it appeared to be) said to be the only factory painted Petty Blue R0 65 Plymouth (its here in Washington).

There is another A990 car near me (besides the blue one). The other A990 was never raced and is supposed to be very original. I'll see if I can talk to the owner about taking a look at the scoop.
I also have a hard time understanding the seam sealer but anything is possible. All it takes is some guy thinking that is how it is supposed to go together. Maybe they tried it on a few cars and then decided it was too messy. Or maybe the caulk gun broke so they stopped doing it. We'll never know.

Yeah, Andy, that's my point: I can't see what gain it would give; just extra weight.
Just got off the phone with Cecil, who drove & worked on the '64 Hemi (Missile VI) and inherited/bought/campaigned VII from '65 on. He doesn't recall any caulking at VI's scoop, though he remembers it ran 10.52 @ 131.88 twice...that said, VI was one of the early hand-built cars I referred to earlier. So if there's an absolutely untouched original '64 out there, it'll be interesting to see if it came with vent windows and whether it had the caulking.
Scott, my reference to the 2 scoops is just to illustrate the design difference. The taller/more angled one was what came on the '65 car before its 10"/15" conversion; but since it was one of the 4 lightweight HT A990 cars, that's the distinction vs the steel scoop. I always thought it interesting that they changed the design a little but not drastically.

Interesting, thanks for posting; steel cars, obviously. If the cars are around and have their fender tags, are the colors coded W & E?

In the pics that curbman68 shows, those clips that hold the scoop are what I was told to use, looks like a fender attaching clip.

I have looked at an original owner '65 Belvedere A990 car in WW1 that had a thin bead of sealer between the scoop and the hood. Car still has most of it's original white paint (all of the paint across the top side of the car is original, there was a secondary color added to some portions of the side in 1966) and most of the original interior as well.
I know of a mostly untouched '64 car...but I think cloudy ownership will prevent anyone from getting a clear answer.

Yes the fender style clip bolts are what was used, same as shown on the black scoop I posted and curbman68 posted.
