need to OK test spray before paint - 03/06/09 01:11 AM

I was trying to get some paint under the car before you showed up so you can see it, but I do not want to shoot any color until you visually OK the test spray. Saturday you can let me know if the color is correct, but there will be no color on the car. Sorry!

Tomorrow my dad and I are driving out to Ohio. We're going so we can see the progress on dad's 73 Challenger. This is an e-mail I got from the bodyshop today.

How am I going to OK the color? I'm sure it will look correct on the test piece but how can I be sure it will be right. I don't want to park next to another Challenger painted A5 metalic gray and see a huge color difference.

When I sent the car out there, some origonal paint was left on the inside tops of the doors but with all the bodywork that has been done I can't be sure that it still exists.

There WILL be a difference from one car to another no matter what. I went to a local Mopar show and there were three lemon twist yellow cars all lined up and every single one was different. The differences could be in the paint brand or even a tiny error in the mixing process.

When you buy multiple containers of paint your supposed to pour all of them into one container to unify the color before it gets loaded into the paint gun.

FWIW the new base-clear systems never match the original factory paints perfectly either.

Short of having an original sample to compare to there isn't a whole lot you can do. If it looks good to you then go for it. I think that is a fairly rare color so you may never have to worry about it.

You're coming all the way out to Ohio and you're not planning on going to the shop of B/E & A Restoration Parts, Inc.? Seriously, if you're anywhere near hear just call me and I'll be there for you. I could care less if you need one of our parts, give me an excuse to come play MOPAR. I've got a bunch of cars here that might give you ideas on the direction you might want to take in your final assembly process. I'd be more that happy to go through the "don't do it that way" list because I've screwed up everything once already so you won't have to.

Hey, how is going.

I just ordered your 3-piece tail trim for the Challenger last week and talked to you on the phone.

We'll try and make it over there. Are you open on Saturday?

even straight from the factory not ever car will match. Some new cars have as many as 12 different variants for one color code. Im sure there were mistakes made mixing paint in 1970 also.

If your happy with the color, Let them spray it.

Im worried that when my car gets painted the Lime-Light is going to be too dark which to me is an indication of too much blue in the mix.

Ill make sure to have a test spray to approve.

Ive found that one thing that will make a HUGE difference in color shades is the color primer that was used on the car. Also, the amount of paint and how many coats of paint put onto a car will effect the color of the paint as well.

all you had to do is ask which paint system the paint shop is using, standard formula or which alternate formula if any ,then go to your local body shop supply store and look up that paint chip,it should be pretty close

Thank you ! Our rep keeps telling us to do a spray out on every color we spray. I keep telling him if his alternate decks are so much closer then everyone elses then its just a waste of paint. He doeast agree. We mix our own paint so we dont have to worry about someone else's oops mixing.

I'm not a body man. Can you go into a little more detail for me please? Should the paint supplier have the factory A5 color code on file?

I looked at the test piece and it wasn't right. He had matched the test piece to one of the fender louvers that he believed to be origonal paint. It was not. The car had been painted a few times before. We found some origonal paint on the inside of the doors but he wasn't sure the metal flake looked right. He thought that since it was just "overspray" that the metal flake looked heavier than it really was. He plans on lightning up the color a bit and adding a little more metal flake. He'll mail the samles to me to decide which one I want.

Well at least your guy is giving you the opportunity to see the color before spraying the car. But I am surprised you did not go out there with your test color already in hand. Why wait and spend a bunch of time getting it figured out there. But better safe than sorry. And I hear you about different shades, kind a why I did not want to go with Plum Crazy. When at the shows I'll ten of them next to each other all different colors. Drives me nutso.

Someone had mentioned the fact that you can just look up the color code in the master list of colors your paint manufacaturer has. I asked the bodyshop about that and he said that the color he showed me WAS the manufacturers color for A5. He also said that he uses the library as a guide. Lots of times he has to find tune the color from there.

The problem I'm having now is trying to figure out the correct shade of argent to paint the tail panel. I'm so used to looking at 35+ year old argent on the panel that both the light and dark argent look wrong.

I have an ongoing post about that. "correct argent for 72-74 Challenger tailpanel"

I just asked the question...Would it be possible to spray the light argent as a base...and then go back over top of it with a light misting of the dark, to get the desiered effect? I think it might work.
