66-70 B body console lid repair

The sheet metal nuts that hold the lid onto the hinge have worn their way into the studs on the lid to the console on my 67 Coronet.

Has anyone ever "thickened" up the studs so the nuts will fit tight on them?

I know they make repro doors, I would prefer to reuse my existing one

You can build up the studs. There is a POR product that is a two part product that forms like steel. Very strong.

Or you could buy an undersized pal nut and expand out the threads to create the right size.

Yes that's the stuff.

If Dayclona says that MARINE JB Weld will work that might be a cheaper and easier way to go.

I would not use regular JB Weld

The JB weld MARINE epoxy is pretty much on par with the POR-15 putty performance wise/spec wise for finish harness, just that the JB Marine takes a good day or 2 to fully harden, the POR is ready to go in about 12 hrs

this...you'll see the same PN# as the one you listed (3200 psi tensile), but this is the heavier bodied gray mix, has almost 4000 psi tensile strength

Same PN# 8272 that I listed above, but has a 4-6 hr set up time rather than a 20 minute set up, great if you require lots of time for intricate build ups

just curious but what is the big difference between the regular jb weld and the jb weld marine stuff? why couldn't you use the regular stuff on the console lid?

I've used both on projects, but IMHO the MARINE version seems to offer a better bond to surfaces

Some antiques I was restoring had attachment with similar fitments. I got rid of some of the roughness with emery without sanding down the residual stud. After that I took some thin wall brass tubing from the hobby shop of the "just" right id to fit over the stud and epoxied it on. after all set up I thinned down the od of the tubing just a bit with emery and slightly enlarged the id of the self threading nuts with an awl and ran them on.
