goodyear or firestone spare tire

goodyear or firestone spare tire - 03/02/09 12:49 AM

I always thought that I had the origonal spare to my dad's 73 Challenger. I was scrounging through parts today and found it in a stack of wheels. The problem is that it is a Goodyear tire. I thought 73's came with Firestone's.

The tire is a WSW Goodyear Polyglass F70-14. It's in great shape and I will still use it when the car is done but is it the origonal spare tire or not?

Goodyear white letter tires were used in 73, I would think wsw would be also.

Goodyear is the correct tire & spare for your car.
There should be a molded in DOT date code on the tire.
Please post the code, date code off the wheel & the car's SPD. TIA!!

So your saying that all the tires were Goodyears not just the spare?

If you got RWL tires did you get a RWL spare or would it have been WSW. Dad's car came with WSW's but I thought I'd put RWL on it when it's done.

I'll try and post a pic of the tire code tonight.

Here is a picture of the DOT code. The cars built date was September 27, 1972.

The tire is in good shape but the wheel has started to rust. What is the best way to remove a 30+ year old tire from the rim without damaging it?

Care to share the DOT code, "H" wheel date code, & car's SEQUECE# and/or engine assembly date?

So if your car had RWL factory...did you get a white letter spare or a WSW?

1973 Challenger
927 - Scheduled Production Date - Wednesday, September 27, 1972

F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas "white stripe" (DOT - MELD DMA342)
- ME - Jackson, MS Goodyear Tire Plant
- LD - F70-14
- DMA - Polyglas White Stripe
- 342 - 34th week of 1972 ~ (2nd week of August)

Can you read the date on the wheel?
A good tire shop employee can remove the tire without damage, just make sure you tell them the tire is important!

Pretty close to this one!!

The car should've had 5 of the same tire, F70-14 w/white strip tires waere STANDARD with the "Rallye package" RWL were optional "$$".

I'm possitive I'll be able to read the wheel. I just didn't think about getting it.

I'm thinking about having two sets of wheels for the car. I'd get a 15" set of magnum 500's with a wider tire in the back for normal driving. Then I'd restore the origonal 14" magnums to put on for shows. The raised white leter tires look great...I'm just wondering if the white walls would look cool too. You rarely see cars at shows with white walls.

I've seen them in the Year One cataloge I think. Maybe they just have the RWL tires. I'd have to look again to be sure.

Kelsey Tire is responsible for all of the Goodyear tires on the reproduction market.

Kelsey Tire Polyglas tires are on the "Performance 2" page.

The F70-14 Polyglas "white stripe" tires weren't available in the past but are listed on their web site. Maybe they are "new" to market as are the long waited for "red stripe" G70-15s for the '69-1/2 6bbl cars.
