Pentastar, Lower RH Fender

Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/26/17 10:51 PM

So I always believed I knew the answer until I went to purchase one today . . .
Gold is what I always believed to be correct (1st pic)
Then I found one listed on-line as silver (2nd Pic)
3rd pic is of my original as it was removed from the car, and while it carries a yellow tint it certainly is not like the 1st photo, and actually more like the 2nd.
So is photo 1 correct and these things fade with time/cleaning?

Hopefully one of you has a great pic of a pampered survivor.

As always, appreciate the help.

Different years I think, 60's stuff I remember being goldish then going to plain chrome in the 70's.

Looking at my cars at the shop, all my 70 survivors parts cars are silver. A 69 NYer is silver. My 68 down are the gold ones.

Gold is correct...

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/27/17 02:25 PM

Well now, that certainly clears things up . . .

To be clear, its for a 70, AAR specifically . . .

I may try pulling my original apart and seeing if there are any signs of color on the back.

Well, looking at my original paint AAR in my garage at the house and it has a silver one just like the two lower photos. I’ve had it since 76. My original paint 70 Charger is a two owner car and it is the same silver. I’ve got some original paint fenders at the shop. I can look on those but I think I’ll keep the silver ones on my 70 model cars.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/27/17 03:05 PM

Thanks Fastmark, I know I've used your collection in the past and no reason to doubt them. Perhaps this is another case where I thought I knew something and didn't. Part of whats throwing me is my original isn't perfect silver and does carry a slight yellow tint, but perhaps this is from a protective clear that may have been used to keep the small foil insert from corroding?

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/27/17 04:40 PM

I wound say the SLIGHT yellow tint is what they started out at in 70. The years of use would fade them for sure to what I see as silver. I have some NOS one that I bought years ago but can’t lay my hands on them. I can’t remember what color they are. That will not help us with assembly line correct, though. Mopar was bad about superseding part to incorrect ones. The gold ones on my early cars are very gold.

I just checked a 71 Challenger and a 69 Coronet original paint fenders in my stock and both are the lighter silver color.

My cars all have gold ones 1964 up to my 72 RR/GTX. Only change was metal to plastic. Silver ones I have seen were used on late eighties and 90's vehicles....
One reproduction silver pentastar notes that they were used specifically in Canada...

My AAR had the gold version and as you can see as a result of light sanding that it was once gold. The aluminum Pentastar came loose from the black plastic base and a pic of the backside verifies this.

I have a Survivor 65 Sport Fury, it is Gold.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/28/17 01:46 PM

Maybe it’s a fading issue. Idk. But I have too many original cars in the silver( possibly light yellow gold) to just dismiss it. NOS will not help us any. I bought NOS trim rings and center caps for my 70 model 15x7 rally wheels. They came in as dark argent 71 caps and 15x6.5 rings. Mopar did that a lot. They sold you what they had. Take your pick, I guess.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/28/17 02:57 PM

So I cleaned mine as well and clearly can see the out side surface is a light yellow gold, perhaps brass in color. Interestingly the back surface appears to be bare aluminum.

So the "Authentic Restoration" ones look to dark gold
The silver isn't correct
Countless versions of ones with incorrect stars that appear more like straight black lines.
Goodmark makes one that appears pretty good (just based on the photo)

Anyone with OCD tendencies manage to find ones they can back??

Gold

NOS are gold, any NOS silver ones?

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/29/17 03:02 AM

Only because it’s interesting, inspired by my good friend AAR1064, I decided to clean mine a bit better.
First pic is top surface in daylight to eliminate any tint from light bulbs, second is back side.
Unlike AAR1064, only the top surface was plated/anodized. I suspect another case where the lowest bidder gets the work.

Yes they did fade or lighten up over time and with washing. But originally they were gold color, at least in 69 & 70. Can't speak for other years. I still own my original non restored 69 Dart and it still has the original pentastar on the fender and it still retains some of the gold color.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/30/17 05:34 AM

I agree with the gold... Got a bunch of parts from cars removed in the 70s and a lot have no see the light of day since and the pentastars are all gold.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/30/17 02:52 PM

Great, I think we all agree on gold at this point, next issue is correct gold.

Looking at the difference between my original and aar1064's original, its clear to see they were not manufactured by the same company, with the same process.

Equally noticeable is the depth of color. Since he sanded the front of his I can only go off the back, and the color or fairly deep, a fair match to the "Authentic Restoration" shown at the top of the thread.

Mine on the other hand appears more light gold or light brass in color on the exposed surface, but the back is clearly not covered in color. Makes it tough to say what it started life as. We also know that Fastmark believed his cars to be silver, or very light gold, more in line with what I found.

So whats a guy to do to be considered correct?
Simply buy the "Authentic Restoration" part?
Does anyone know if its a two piece construction?
Paint or plated?

The only other options would be to find an NOS one or get mine anodized with a shade of yellow gold thats closer to my current color.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/30/17 05:45 PM

I had a bunch of Nos ones it's the only correct gold. Here a reproduction one from a year or so ago. Nothing like Nos. I had about 13 of them to sell after keeping ones for my cars. I have one left in the package. I sold almost all of them to Moparts members and they are still the same price. Pm if interested.

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 11/30/17 08:01 PM

All 4 of my classic cars have them & they are gold. I even added one to my 2012 Challenger Classic to keep the typical Mopar Muscle theme going.

QuickBpBp,

You are over your PM limit. I was going to PM you that if AAR#2 does not want the 1 NOS Pentastar you have remaining, I would be willing to purchase for my project.

Thanks.

I have a few I bought NOS back in the mid-late 70's, they're all on my cars, but my latest project I needed one, and looked at and bought a few repros (appears 2 or more different mfg's/vendors making them, or revisions?), while they were all OK from the various vendors, only one was a match compared to the originals and NOS units I have, the one from Year One was pretty much "dead-on" in terms of appearance/construction...

Year One (bottom) offering compared to your NOS/repro pics below

Dayclona, the YO image is identical to the Goodmark image I mentioned in an earlier posting, perhaps YO and Goodmark are one in the same?

Could be?...YO is mostly just a marketing agent of other vendors offerings, although they do have a few of their own exclusive licensed products...

Re: Pentastar, Lower RH Fender - 12/01/17 01:47 AM

That's a big improvement on the reproduction for sure... The one I have next to the real one was sold being a Moparts sponsor. Maybe he now sells the newer version that at least resembles a real one. Aar#2 I sent you a PM...

I bought three from Koller Dodge in 2003 for $5.75ea. They look identical to the one in this eBay listing. Guess I should have bought more.

I think I bought one from Kohler also around the same time & it was a repop.
